Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Kremlin payroll is much better than Clinton's, just ask Shinra.
Oh I agree, if nothing else the US going isolationist has historically lead to the rest of the world going bat shit crazy, as the UK has just proved we really can't be trusted over in Europe right now.

He's implying Sci-Fi Slasher is a troll.
@Protagonist
According to one of the guys in the Gundam thread I'm also paid by Sunrise to defend Mobile Suit Gundam SEED from criticism. Because there's no way I could like a show he doesn't, right?
On a more serious note, I always find the accusations of someone being a shill to be a fascinating study in irrational thinking. "This person does not think like I do. Therefore they must be getting paid to think that way."
General rule of thumb—unless an account posts nowhere but this forum, and about literally nothing but how bad one candidate/how great another candidate is, they probably aren't a shill. Real shills don't have time to have actual discussions.
There's lots of people in this thread, and others, who I disagree with vehemently (I'm not naming names obviously; you know who you are). But I'd never accuse of being shills. I might think you're misinformed, or flat out wrong, but I'd never question whether you actually hold your convictions because that would just be silly.
@Elle: I have read several such studies, and while you may accuse me of moving the goalposts, I do not think altruistic behavior as demonstrated in these studies and self interest driven models of human behavior are mutually exclusive-from an evolutionary psychology perspective it makes perfect sense-and also believe that the "selfish" of that self interest tends to become more pronounced in large numbers.
To bring matters back towards the topic of US politics, my focus on the misdeeds of the US is no different than focusing on racism by whites against nonwhites in a white majority country rather than the converse; the overwhelming power of the United States makes it capable of far more harm than any other nation or non-state actor.

Alright. Here's a theory I have on this election:
Trump was actually a plant to make sure that Hillary won by being a terrible candidate. Meanwhile, Sanders was a plant from the Trump campaign to disrupt Hillary so Trump would stand a chance. Meanwhile, Hillary was a plant by the Sanders campaign because she isn't very popular and might make Sanders look better by comparison.
There's three people in on this conspiracy. Which means...
HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED! When the president gives their inauguration speech, they'll announce Half Life 3, and then resign. Gabe Newell will step in and assume the presidency!
Leviticus 19:34The misdeeds of the US come on the heels, often, of misdeeds by other nations. Continuing down the turtle pile, you just end up finding more of the shelled-bastards.
Right now the focus should be on correcting the misdirection of US political "thought leaders", such as they are. Once corporate interests stop funding campaigns, and old money candidates stop engaging in rampant incest and nepotism, it'll be easier for the might of the US to be shepherded in a direction more befitting a heavyweight.
It feels like the latest chapter of Miracleman.

Democracy with a misinformed public and a broken incentive system that has allowed parties to ignore their voters' voices for decades.
Contrast with the Swiss, who do Democracy mostly right. They have gotten stupid about migration too, but they kept it under control.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Also you generally still feel bad for the fucked over minority in a democracy. Likewise the minority after an election don't shut up and do nothing till the next vote.
Also democracy my ass, we just swapped PM without a vote, we're not that committed to democracy. Also we made our version of Trump Foreign Secretary
That and it's hard to say the vote was democratic when so many people were lied to and conned, the entire referendum is an election fraud investigation waiting to happen (which our goverment is actually also currently subject to, which if it goes thought might invalidate the government's majority and throw into question all the things it did with that majority (including calling the referendum)).

I never made ludicrous claims along the lines of you being paid, Ambar, and if you had actually read my post, you would know that I wasn't pissed at you because you don't conform to my beliefs. I'm pissed because you keep beating a dead horse. We get it, he wasn't able to do shit; the reality has sunk in. It would be nice if you didn't tar the entire Sanders base according to your mindset; rubbing it in the face of people doesn't really make you that many friends or acquaintances.
Also, I never said that my vote would magically change everything. If you had actually bothered to read it, you would know that all I was trying to say was that you envisioning all of Sanders' voters as armchair warriors was completely wrong. Did you not see this (
)?
Of course, my rebuttal of your points is just going to be seen as trolling by people like Silas while your own snide responses will simply be reprimanded for "feeding the troll." Yeah, 'cause disagreeing with somebody is "trolling." Amazing environment we have in this thread.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."Disagreeing with someone isn't trolling, personally insulting them by calling them "little more than a Clinton shill" however would fall under most definitions of trolling. Or being a jackass.
Oh and did I miss the reaction to Trump's VP pick?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranOh yeah, it's Pence.

Understandable. It's someone the GOP wouldn't mind having in power, and the fact of the matter is, if Trump is elected, there's a very good chance his VP will be running the show since Trump doesn't appear to care about the actual job of governing.
