Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yet you spend most of your time parroting whatever Putin wants to you say on Russian state news networks.
God I hate this guy.
Oh really when? It's interesting to juxtapose the two parties' pundits. On the one side, we have messages about national unity, economic enfranchisement, and so on. On the other, "De Ebil Mooslims Are Komink To Keel Us!"
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yes. We will kill you all. That is what we are focused on. Then we'll convert you. Posthumously, so that there's no "My name is Kunta Kinte" nonsense. Then we'll put three golden balls on top of every cupola and every skyscraper. They make for great lighting rots, especially the divine sort of bolts. How will we do that, you ask? One does simply walk into a gun shop and buy the necessary equipment. Why bother with explosives when all you need is gun, gun, gun is all you need.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. And to think I thought she was reasonably sane. If the Greens want to become the Tea Party of the left, they're going to find themselves in the time-out corner for all eternity.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Am I also the only one who thinks her relentless badgering of Sanders and her whole "join the Greens" is just kinda...desperate and creepy? It's like me saying that I'll dump my girlfriend if Emma Stone agrees to go out with me. IE: something that has never shown any hint of actually happening.

Stay behind and face an actual trial? To go through proper channels as a Whistleblower? To narrowly limit his leaks to any legal abuses he had actually witnessed?
The NSA stuff with Snowden? At best it's debatable. When he starts flat out offering foreign surveillance info to other countries like, oh, say, China, in return for safe haven after revealing he did not plan this stuff out well at all, then he's crossed a line I have no idea how he gets defended on.
And then he goes and basically lets Putin puff himself up in a ridiculously awful 'interview' that was more a propaganda piece in a country with far worse journalistic freedom than the US.

Why shouldn't he? They absolutely are guilty.
Snowden stole classified documents, dumped them without knowing what was actually in them and tries to deflect whenever he's asked about "hey, why did you jeopardize secret operations overseas that had fuck all to do with domestic surveillance?" Yes, I'm sorry, the US spies on China, Russia and friendly nations. Is that unconstitutional or against the law? And if not, then what the heck gives Ed Snowden the right to decide "I personally do not like this" and jeopardize foreign operations?
And yes, we spy on Al-Qaeda and hack their stuff. I'm all torn up about that

I would be in favor of extending an olive branch to Russia though; while the current crisis was initiated by Russia, things have been building since the 90's. It takes two to tango in international relationships, and while that's true of both escalation and deescalation, the US has much less at stake than Russia does, putting it in a much better position to start on the path towards peace than Russia.
Perhaps because he has no other choice; Russia would dump him in a river if he wasn't playing along, and he'd spend the rest of his days in a hole where the sun doesn't shine if the US got its hands on him.
For all the talk about whistleblower protection, people who have tried to come out about these sorts of things in the past have universally had their lives destroyed.

Trump? He promised to "take them back" from "immigrants" instead.
