Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Four parties would ultimately only act as a transitional state between another two party alignment unless they managed to get our voting system changed, in which case the libertarians would coalition with the GOP and the Greens or whoever with the democrats. Seriously, it's entirely possible that the GOP is going to collapse over the course of the next few cycles. If they actually stand to spoil the election and Stein doesn't ask her supporters in contested states to back Clinton, that's the time to disavow the Greens.

Not over a long period of time no, but a deeply fractured electorate can temporarily produce multiparty alignments, particularly when major regional differences exist, hence the Scottish National Party in the FPTP UK.
And? This is about opposing American imperialism, not gassing Jews. It would result in a multipolar world, true, but it wouldn't be the disaster that the doomsayers claim it to be by a longshot, especially considering the need to compromise with the pro-military democrats.

Among other acts of aggression carried out by the United States in its history, though in the modern context, the treatment of Latin America during the cold war is more the sort of thing I'm thinking about. Which, contrary to what people insist did not end because of the cold war ending, it ended because the US's major commitments in the middle east and east Asia. Relatedly, I recall someone said earlier that if Hawaii wanted a referendum for independence, they'd have more right to it than any other state, and I agree with that sentiment.

I've been keeping an eye on the Republican platform committee stuff going on right now. It's creeping me out. So far we've got:
- Pornography is a "public health crisis" because, apparently, it's all child pornography.
- Ban gay marriage (no surprise here)
- Children raised in "traditional homes" are better off.
- This one is really bad because they go so far as to specify an "intact biological family" so apparently single parent families are out of luck.
- The ability to force children through conversion therapy
- This is the really horrifying one, because conversion therapy, at best, puts the victim on the path to a nervous breakdown.
- Education must include the Bible
- Coal is a "clean form of energy".
- Quit trying to redefine words. Coal is not clean. Period. Hell, it's radioactive.
It's safe to say that America is an empire of sorts (though, the definition of empire is rather vague and probably includes a lot of states). The US has used military and economic force to gain territory. It isn't really expansionist, though (we haven't had a new state added in forever). Its method of imperialism is usually through cultural hegemony and economic reliance-it creates and props up states that it considers helpful to itself.
Personally, I don't have a problem with this on principle. The way I see it, it's rather necessary for the overall prosperity of the first world in general. For example, Canada is a lot better off for being just north of the US and allied with it (not necessarily that it needs the US, but it's undeniably a major perk that Canada has). West Germany and South Korea are (or were) also good examples of nations that were successful due to US intervention.

Just a little piece detailing how calmly, rationally, and realistically Bernie Bros are taking his concession.
Saying "Fuck this lesser evil shit. I'm voting for the greater good." is all well and good until you actually wind up living under the greater evil's regime. I'm a straight white dude from a middle class background. I could probably do fine under Trump. All the minorities, poor, and disenfranchised? Not so much. I refuse to respect anyone that's willing to throw them under the bus out of some misguided idealism.
Catering to misguided idealism is a way to build the beginnings of a base for a party. I'd welcome someone more pragmatic (someone who would inst from the get-go on their supporters voting for Clinton in swing states) to step up to the plate, but neither the Greens nor the Libertarians can afford to say no to potential voters, especially during this particular cycle where they probably have the best chance since the early 90s of getting seats in congress and perhaps also locally.

Seriously, she wants to cut military spending by at least 50%. The military industrial complex that everyone hates on also employees a lot of people and generates a ton of economic activity. Stein would trigger mass unemployment and a recession, if not a depression. And that's not getting into the international aspect, she essentially wants to leave Asia to China and Eastern Europe to Russia.
She's a far left fanatic. She's is what Bernie detractors branded him as.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
