Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The part of me that engages in schadenfreude hopes they get their Trump presidency so they can continue to not find employment and have to live in his neo-fascist clown state. Of course, that would be a pointless wish: they regard themselves as having nothing to lose, so the self-destruction of the nation is not a negative for them. What they don't truly appreciate is how much worse they could have it.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The other thing that bothers me about Trump supporters (and Sanders-Trump crossover voters) is their complete disregard for what will happen to people who are not secure white male and well off.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman
I suppose that they welcome the forthcoming revolution. I don't think they appreciate that their "black brothers and sisters" would eagerly put them up against the wall for having supported Trump even ironically. And some of them are unabashed racists, anyway.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"We are now in The World According to Garp territory: "Even Ellen James is against the Ellen Jamesians" (possibly imperfect quote)

Trump delenda est![]()
Yeah. Not everyone who supports Trump is apathetic to the plight of minorities.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.So much worse.
And when the dust settles and whatever horrible disasters have ended, Europe will look to us like, "What the hell happened, America?!"
And we will be like, "We got the money out of Washington and replaced it with radical True Believers. Then we learned a valuable lesson about the importance of enlightened self-interest in the political system."

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I was reading up on David Duke a few days ago (for those of you not in the loop, Duke is a former KKK member who recently praised Donald Trump), and then I read about his campaign for Governor of Louisiana, and thought to myself, "Hey, doesn't this resemble the 2016 election?" I mean, there are pretty uncanny similarities (a career politician widely seen as corrupt wins against a racist demagogue who is associated with white supremacist groups). Compare and contrast for yourself: [1]
Duke is a former KKK Grand Master — the head honcho. He's run some hilariously racist political campaigns and Trump had to be reminded by his staff that a direct endorsement from that guy is not a good thing. At one point, Trump pretended not to know who he is.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I wouldn't call that crazy. I would call that the appropriate outcome.
There aren't as many white people in this country as white people seem to think there are. "Minorities" is a bit of misleading in that regard. White people outnumber any given minority, sure. But all of them? Not by a long shot.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yeah, that was kind of funny. I was worried a guy who I listen to (though, honestly, I think he's too right wing even for me-Ted Cruz was his first choice) was going to start supporting Trump. However, when Trump didn't immediately denounce David Duke he flipped out in a way that I found kind of hilarious.
Leviticus 19:34Bernie would make the perfect attacker for Clinton in the general. He doesn't hold back, it motivates key blocs, doesn't piss off anyone who isn't with Trump anyway and is damn good entertainment to. Sanders gets to play to his strengths while Clinton deals with policy.
Please Hillary, let Bill, Bernie and Biden on the same stage and just have them go to town on Trump. It would be a thing of absolute beauty.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.@Tobias: Young voters in England were strongly against Brexit, in the same way young Americans are strongly against Trump. 70+% opposition (to Trump, I don't recall what the margin for Brexit was) is an extremely strong mandate among the demographic. The "crossover" supporters are both an extremely small minority of Sanders voters (smaller in fact than the percentage of Clinton's supporters claiming they would support Mitt Romney at this point in the race based on Pew Research's election breakdown, 9% now versus 15% then), despite a much higher dissaproval rate of Clinton among Sanders' supporters compared to 2008.
@Potatoes: A cultural and political paradigm shift of historic proportions. Many other such shifts have been catalyzed by technological changes that made information more readily available, here that change is the Intetnet.
