Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah.
The flaw in the argument that getting angry and treating rapists like rapists, white supremacists like white supremacists, etc. is that it falls into the cult of centrism. The fallacious idea that there is always an acceptable middle ground, and that we should always work together to find it.
There isn't. Some ideas, worldviews, and cultural constructs just need to burn.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.But when push comes to shove, far fewer people are actually petty enough to hand the nation to a deranged madman out of spite. They might talk it up because - for some reason - people still think that forceful threats will get results, but they don't actually want to pull the trigger. They're just talking out of desperation.
I'm reminded of a bratty child throwing a tantrum. "I'll hold my breath until I turn blue and die! And then you'll really be sorry! So there!"
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. That's more or less exactly what it is. An outraged emotional response issued out of desperation in the tenuous hope of winning a discussion that has already been lost. A tantrum.
And most people can't maintain a tantrum forever. Eventually they calm down, feel really self-conscious about how they behaved just then, and quietly shuffle off to never speak of it again.
I get that. I've wrestled with rage addiction throughout my life. I've thrown my share of tantrums, believe you me. And as long as they do it before November, no harm no foul.

....Yeah.
New Survey coming this weekend!Yep. It's the anti-establishment revolutionary fringe that thinks all we need to clean up Washington is a morally-pure candidate who will walk into the White House, turn on a fire hose, and wash out all the corruption, insider politics, and nefarious motives that are preventing Congressmen from immediately changing the laws into whatever these people think are clearly the only just laws that anyone could see if they weren't blinded by greed.
The group that doesn't really care to learn more about party politics, bipartisan voting, closed-door dealmaking, etc. because they look at these topics and all they see is, "Corruption, corruption, CORRUPTION!!!! All government is corruption!"

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Nine out of ten revolutionaries don't really want to fix the system and create a utopia for the people. They're just upset about the crown being on someone else's head.
Every now and then, you might find a gem who really does want to rob from the rich and give to the poor, but he usually gets drowned out by the crowd that wants a period after "rich".

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.For what I see there now with Trump,Sanders and many is this tendecy of public who want SOMETHING being made NOW, not surprising Trumo promise sound like downright miracles or magic a this point
"I wil make elected, them I will made Wall apear and take all muslim and throw them away!" I call that the "infantilization"(made and write wrong but fuck it) of politics where everything is reduce to "but I make me feel better" kind of thing
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"So there's been a very interesting poll of American youth by ethnic background done by the AP associated Black Youth Project
in regards to how young Americans of different ethnic backgrounds view the current presidential race and the primaries.
Among other indications of a massive generational gap between millenials and earlier generations in terms of political leaning, Sanders' two biggest demographics were Asian and Hispanic millenisls, which favored him 69% to 21% and 71% to 24%. Non Hispanic whites and blacks respectively supported Sanders over Clinton 62 to 32 percent and 53 to 39 percent.
About 70 percent of millenials across demographics are dissatisfied with the choices for this election, which is unsurprising.
About 70% of millenials who voted in a primary did so in the democratic primary, with 41% having voted according to this poll.
Sanders' unfavorables were highest among white millenials (34% unfavorable vs less than 20% for all other demographics), though still much better than Clinton's, and not even in the same ballpark as Trump's, who has 69% unfavorability among white millenials (the low point) and 84% disapproval among all other millenial demographics.
Something big is happening. You saw similarly massive generational gaps in support for Brexit in favor of the EU, and similarly massive gaps among support for far right parties throughout Europe.
I wonder how many millennials are going to vote for Trump for the same reason some folks voted for Brexit: because they think the government's a sham, the election is rigged, and/or their vote doesn't matter, so they're going to issue a protest vote for the deranged option that "obviously" won't succeed as a stern middle finger to the political system.
I mean, surely there has to be some radical fringe that thinks Trump's purpose in the election is to make it so that nobody is surprised when the Illuminati selects Clinton to be our new Overlord.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I'm pleasantly surprised(and I owe Silasw money). I was positive he would never endorse Clinton- instead just dropping out following a floor fight at the Convention.
I did worry to some exent about him running third party, but less so, especially because that recent thing with Jill Stein offering to let him be the nominee strongly suggested that she was worried about him doing what he did today and that offer was a Hail Mary attempt to stop it.
