The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not seeing how this helps him at all. He's already got the racist vote down pat. To exploit this, Trump would have to come firmly down against the protesters, which will just piss off black people and rile up people who are already going to vote for him anyway.

There aren't too many undecided voters anymore. All the important lines have been drawn already.

Just a matter of getting people out there.

Oh really when?

As hypocritical of me it is to say, I think we should cool it with the doomsaying. As tragic as this is, it probably won't lead to a race war or President Trump.

[up] We already have escalating racial violence, and without serious reform it's not going to improve. It's doubtful this will help Trump, without sustained electoral violence, it's very unlikely he'll win.

The logic is fairly straightforward, if ultimately counterproductive. "White cops kill black people, get away with it, so..."

What angers me more is that as far as I know the DPD have been trying their best to support BLM protests! And now that trust may be effectively shattered.

Goddammit

If the dialog is truly strong, DPD's connection with BLM will not be strained by this, unless it comes to light that the shooter was affiliated with BLM and that the local chapter was aware of warning signs about him.

For the record, the shooter was unaffiliated.

People are already calling for race war though.

To wit: "This is now war. Watch out Obama. Watch out black lives matter punks. Real America is coming after you."

I suspect that the closeness between DPD and BLM may have been the reasoning that DPD were targeted, it could have been closeness if the shooter was local but it might also have been because he didn't like DPD and BLM working together and wanted a race war.

According to an acquaintance in the force, one of the counties in NC has told their officers "for their own safety" to not speak to anyone, be it on the job or online, who "has the appearance of a BLM member or BLM supporter."

Strangely enough that might make things safer if they interpret it to mean they should avoid black people.

So racist P Ds up and down the country are using this as an excuse to double down? Fantastic.

Avoiding black people is what they should be doing unless there's suspicion of an actual crime or a real threat.

It's when they pull industrial action like refusing to police black neighborhoods at all that it becomes an issue.

@Silasw, BLM organized a small protest in my neck of the woods recently, though that particular case seemed pretty cut and dry. A little more than a decade ago though the local police there were run by a out and out Klansman who tortured false confessions out of black suspects and ran his own little crime racket on the side, so there's still very little trust between them and the community.

So apparently, Jill Stein has offered to step aside as the party's nominee for Bernie Sanders. The response of course has been polite silence. If Trump was polling at 10% and the GOP was slated to lose half of congress, I'd say go for it since at that point it's clear the GOP would soon be going the way of the Whigs which creates an opening for a new major party to take their place as the opposition but as things stand the GOP is still politically potent enough that doing so would risk a Trump presidency. It would be nice if the Greens did well enough to get federal funding though (10% of votes), since that would pave the way for them to become a major party if the GOP continues it's spiral towards collapse.

When you freak out over the actions of terrorists, that means they've already succeeded in beating you. That's their whole mode of operation, to scare you and make you afraid of what they'll do. You can't let that fear get to you, otherwise they win.

Nobody's really concerned with what these guys are going to do. They did what they came for. What people are worried about is what other people are going to do in response to them.

To use your terrorist metaphor, it would be accurate if people were saying, "Where will these radical extremists strike next?! We're not safe anywhere!"

Instead, this is more like, in the wake of a terrorist act, people going, "These f*cking idiots are going to get Muslims put in internment camps!"

Indeed. The response to the Dallas shootings is not going to be, "Wow, Mister Black Man, you have a cogent point. We must work to control racial bias in our policing so that you do not feel the need to lash out in anger in the future." It's going to be, "See, that's why police have to shoot black people."

Must-Read: Scott Lemieux: Why Did Obama Do so Well at the Supreme Court?

(Basically that Obama's dealing with the last vestiges of across-the-aisle Republicans (and Democrats) from older generations. Any new Judges are going to be much more firebrand/partisan)

(Basically the organization is unwilling to concede its theory of coaxing change from both sides is unrealistic in the current enviornment, as it would undermine the entire organization's existence, so they stick to a dream world.)
