The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] "They know what’s going on, they’ve seen what’s happening."

And what would that be, the army of mythical transgender bathroom-rapists?

Incidentally, reminds me of a similarly horrible/violence-stoking line in his speech yesterday to the effect that radical Islamists were sending people to Ohio as sleeper cells (Be safe, Ohio Muslims).

So much for his (shoddy) attempt to get the votes of "the gays". Guess he doesn't realize trans people and homosexuals are allied politically....

Oh look, Trump is still evil. Big surprise.

Didn't he just say a while ago that he was in favor of transgender people using the bathrooms they wish? So he can't even keep a consistent campaign message.

Am I the only one hoping for the American Nazi Party or the equivalent to send a candidate a la Johnson and Stein and that guy starts taking away Trump's mojo for reasons of mere consistency?

Why would the ANP bother? Wouldn't they just endorse Trump?

Several of the American Nazi groups have already endorsed Trump.

Y'know, to give Trump his due, he makes it very easy to decide who to vote for (or, at minimum, who not to vote for)

I just hope that the RNC doesn't try to dump him-apparently, he met with Senate Republicans today and butted heads with them. A Trump/Gingrich (his likely VP) ticket would be like Christmas for Clinton.

If they dump him, would he still go third party?

At this point, Trump would find it almost impossible to get ballot access in all fifty states, or even a significant majority of them. That assumes, of course, that he could get his "ground game" into gear and create a national campaign apparatus from scratch that could acquire the necessary signatures in each state.

Maybe not, technically he could urge his voters to vote him in as a write in.

@Alley Oop: there was a few months ago when he switched stances on abortion three times in the space of a day. This latest thing is just par the course for him. He says whatever he thinks the audience wants to hear at the time.

Keyword "thinks," though it's more likely the lackthereof, given his his performance with House Republicans.

Another Republican in the meeting who declined to go on the record so he could speak candidly told TPM that Trump was asked pointedly if he would defend Article I of the Constitution.

“Not only will I stand up for Article One,” Trump enthusiastically stated, according to the member in the room. “I'll stand up for Article Two, Article 12, you name it of the Constitution.”

The Republican member said that Trump’s lack of knowledge about how many articles exist, gave him “a little pause.” (The Constitution has seven articles and 27 amendments.)

Besides indicating Trump has little real knowledge of the Constitution, it also shows an insensitivity to the purpose of the question. Article I lists the powers of the Congress, which many Republicans say has been undermined by an overreaching Obama. Trump doesn’t seem to understand that he was being asked about legislative-executive relations and the proper balance between those branches. He didn't know, and probably doesn’t care. Lawmakers should.

You name it, he's all for it. Or dead-set against it. Or both, alternately. But whatever the issue, you'll probably never hear Trump say that he's on the fence, or ambivalent, or has no opinion. He has very strong opinions, even if he doesn't know what they are...

I kind of hate these tiny internet articles. They give so little information beyond "a thing is happening." I kind of doubt they could get a criminal indictment if the Justice Department has declined to prosecute, though, and there has to be a loss of steam on this issue.

State can't do criminal prosecutions, but it can punish its employees.

I'm not sure exactly what powers they have in this regard but I would guess that in this case, the FBI is the police and the State Department is Internal Affairs. Meaning, they may be able to issue punishments and recommendations but not bring formal charges on their own.
