Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Warder of the damned
I love how everyone is pointing out Ambars horribly faulty logic concerning Clinton and Sanders, and Ambar isn't responding. Kinda hard to keep whining about how "Clinton has it much harder!" when your whole line of thinking just got crushed, right?
Isn't the WHCD just delivery anyway? Wouldn't the same team that wrote this joke write her jokes for the dinner? Now delivery is important, but let's not act like Clinton is suddenly going to have to write her own material.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran- States (i.e. Republican states) are allowed to opt out, a la Obamacare.
- It has a 10 hour a week work requirement (which could have damaging consequence to jobs at the college's in-campus stores and jobs held in the surrounding area.) in the interest of garnering conservative votes.
- They want to have administrative costs gutted to help pay for this/cover this, by automating and firing people as much as possible
Given Trump's history of racist and implicitly racist statements and actions, he's long since used up any benefit of the doubt in that regard.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Opt-in for the tuition-free college thing should work better than it did for Medicaid. Despite the Republicans being full-willing to spite the people of their states over it, Medicaid's still something that's just for the poor. Middle class benefits like that will be harder to spurn and get away with it, even upper-middle class people will appreciate not having this financial burden.
x7 Trump himself may not have intended any anti-semitism (and that's debatable), but the image originated and was previously circulated among many pro-racism sites.
On Rachel Maddow last night (sans Rachel, who had the night off), a former Assistant Secretary of State was trying to downplay the FBI report on Clinton's use of private email by saying that Carney was not correctly describing the emails that contained marked classified information. Way to stay classy, folks. Rather than admitting that you did things inappropriately and claiming that you had no choice if you wanted to do business, you make all these evasions and contradictions that weaken your case in the public's eye. Do you not realize that, like all other kinda-sorta-maybe scandals, perception is everything when it comes to whether people will vote for Hillary?
Yes. A Star of David superimposed on piles of cash is textbook anti-Semitic code. Even if unintentional (which, as noted, is extremely unlikely), it's unbelievably insensitive and stupid, and Trump has been bringing these folks out of the woodwork in droves with such tactics whilst tacitly accepting their support. White nationalists, KKK members, anti-Semites, anti-Islamic hate groups, anti-Hispanics... they're all flocking to his banner. "Finally, someone understands us!"

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@Silas - You are correct, but part of comedic wit is delivery.
@Fighteer - Thats because "its too old to use" is not a true statement. It was an institutional momentum where secrecy wasn't taken seriously due to the overuse of the classification system, and therefore for the sake of ease, sidestepped. People won't understand that though, at least not in a tv blurb, so they do the spin instead.
They should just admit mistakes were made and move on.
"They should just admit mistakes were made and move on."
Pretty much this. Hemming and hawing and offering all these circumlocutions only makes them look shadier.
Of course, part of the problem is that State's systems still haven't been upgraded (as I understand), so this situation is not actually going to improve. Its personnel will still evade the security apparatus out of convenience regardless of any FBI report, so any apology would look hypocritical.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, Republicans on five or more committees all want his head on a platter. How dare he not deliver the answers they wanted!
On the security issue, okay, yes, there are two problems. One is the technology, and the other is the security rules themselves. Fundamentally, government agencies like State exist in an eternal tension between the people whose job it is to do the government's business and the people whose job it is to keep information secret. The current balance seems to be that, if you don't break the rules too egregiously, you just get a slap on the wrist, and everyone generally agrees to look the other way about things like using private email because of the added convenience.
Whether this is a viable state of affairs is an open question, but it's not the question Republicans are asking (after all, they didn't give a damn when their people were in State). They want Hillary's scalp, and they don't care how they get it.
