Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Agreed. I detest using this term because I feel it gets thrown around so much by people who vastly overestimate its influential power, but I believe that Trump has so many "true believers" behind him that a Trump assassination could legitimately make a martyr of him. Which would have devastating consequences for people who don't want "The American Civil War II: We Crushed The Idiots Pretty Hard This Time, But Damn If They Didn't Kill A Lot Of Innocent People Along The Way" happening in their back yards.
Jesus Christ, I can't even....
Why is this guy so popular. Why.
Don't answer that, I know why, I just...the f*ck.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.For what it's worth, Trump's position is that the Iraq war was a mistake and that he never supported it (which is untrue-in fact, he supported it before W did).
Leviticus 19:34You know, a funny thought just occurred to me. What if Trump's big ol' campaign is a hoax, but not for the reasons we all might think?
TRUMP: You know, winning this election, it has been, let me tell you, it has been the most fantastic experience I've ever had in my career, yeah, in my career, and let me tell you, I could not do it without you, no I couldn't, that is a fact. But at some point, you gotta' be honest; you gotta' be at some point, you just gotta' be. And the truth is, I ran this whole fucking campaign to be President just to see if I could actually do it. I've got no clue how to actually run this country; everything I've ever said for this entire campaign has been nothing but piss poor attempts at propaganda. And now, I've actually won. So... I guess I'm done. Keep in touch ya'all! Remember, whoever's actually gonna' be your next President, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! WOOT!
There was something someone proposed as a joke that was Trump's inauguration speech. It's funny, because it kind of does sound like something he'd say. He basically admits that he was running to see if people would really fall for it (though he does admit that he meant a lot of things he said). Finally, he says something to the effect of "I'm about to do what Hitler should have done when he was elected, and resign now. Thanks."
Leviticus 19:34[There is speculation
That Trump's candidacy is
intended that even if he fails
he plans to use it to leverage
starting essentially his own version of Fox News Channel.
i.e. it's graft.
Graft that is comically common among Republican candidates to get book deals, TV jobs, jobs at Republican think tanks, deals in conservative publishing.

Not just Minority Democrats.
He'll also blame the party elites for not backing him enough. That he got "Stabbed in the back".
Feeding the burning of the GOP tent further to purge all elites and experts from the party.

Uh oh. I just saw CNN talking about the baton rouge shooting with video. It's bad. Black man wrestled to the ground after being tazed then shot. By two white officers. One officer was struggling with the suspect on the ground and the other is standing then kneeling to help. One of them apparently yelled "he has a gun!" and then the free officer shot the suspect.
Already seen one insightful comment that if you were the officer struggling with a suspect the last thing you want your partner to do is pull his gun and aim it in your direction.
This one looks bad. The video is already spreading, you can probably find it with a Google search.

If we accept the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics wherein anything that is allowed in physics does happen in a nigh-infinite multiverse I still find trump getting the nomination to be fucking impossible. I am still like 57% sure that he'll reveal it was all a big joke at the convention and throw the GOP into chaos.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?![]()
Video in this kind of case is a double-edged sword. It's obviously a useful piece of evidence for any investigation, but it's still only a piece, and a single point of view can be misleading while still convincing the public that it's an open-and-shut case.
And shooting a suspect that a fellow officer is struggling with may be the less dangerous option if the suspect is armed, especially at close range and with a clear field of fire. If it comes down to "if I shoot and miss I may hit the officer, but if I don't shoot than the suspect will shoot the officer, and missing is unlikely in this situation" then taking the shot is a reasonable decision.

You have to remember something about Trump: this man has spent decades surrounded by people whose job it is to tell him everything he says, does and thinks is perfect and brilliant. He has no self awareness; that is long, long gone. He says things, hears people cheering for him and convinces himself how well loved he is. What you see with Trump? It's what you get.
Um...Okay, Bernie.
Sure. We'll do that.
New Survey coming this weekend!@Tactical: the funniest bit in that article is this:

Sure you can, haven't you ever heard of Blackwater? Now known as Academi?
Or the Iraq war?
Oh really when?
