Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Not quite the same thing. The problem is more that Democrats have a really weak downticket game and a lot of trouble winning elections at the local and state level, which means that they won't have much established talent for the Presidential elections in 2024 and beyond. Part of why we were making smartass comments about Hillary back in 2015 was because, as early as 2010, it looked like there wasn't anyone else in the Democratic Party who had the visibility to hit the Presidential track. (It must be noted that Bernie Sanders is not a Democrat, and his candidacy was a very dark horse indeed - albeit a good one for the party in the end.)
Labour's problem is that their entire leadership is in rebellion and they're having to raise new shadow ministers from scratch. By the time Corbyn dies, though, either they'll have experienced leadership, or the whole point will be moot because the Blairites will take back power.

Regarding that video from the last page: who knew John Cena was such a mensch? I have no love at all for pro wrestling, but now I know that at least one wrestler hasn't let the steroids go to his brain.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
It's not just about becoming Boehner 2.0 — that was inevitable for anyone who took that particular gavel who wasn't a full-on Tea Party nutbag.
No, Ryan has, for years, been held out (wrongly) by the Beltway media as a "serious, responsible policy guy" — a brainiac whom the Republican Party turns to for sensible ideas amid the raging storm. The problem is that this image is an outright fabrication: Ryan has never offered any ideas that are better than retreads of stuff that failed a long time ago, usually with some extra mumbo jumbo and magic asterisks thrown in.
As an idea man, he's a complete washout, but try telling that to the media.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, unsurprisingly, the FBI isn't recommending indictment. I was briefly wondering whether the FBI director would be tempted to play kingmaker after Lynch agreed to abide by his recommendation, but it looks like he's sufficiently professional to be above that, or at least not confident that the GOP would win in November even if he pulled that.

I suppose it's always possible, in some world where things are not all run by shadowy conspiracies, that there simply isn't enough evidence of wrongdoing to justify a criminal indictment...
Which is not to say that I might be totally above politics in such a position — were I the FBI director and tasked with making a judgment call that might hand the country to Donald Trump, I would find it hard to remain unbiased.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Some people will freak out about this (and seriously, can someone check on HA Goodman?) Others will be disinclined to believe not being indicted when available evidence is insufficient to show you actually committed a crime is evidence of horrible corruption and the death of Democracy.
