Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Meanwhile, in one possible future, Trump somehow managed to build a wall all the way up to the moon. Somehow, this completely failed to stem the tide of immigration. We go live to an interview with Bob, an illegal immigrant from Mexico in the year 2020. Bob, how have people managed to get past the wall? It's so big.
Bob: See, the trick is that Mexico isn't landlocked. So what we do is, we follow the desert until we hit the point where wall and gulf meet. Then we swim around it. You get to the other side, you are in Texas.

"They are people that Trump would want nothing to do with," r/the_donald's founder, JCM 267, said in a post announcing the decision. "Just as Trump would, we disavow them."

Meanwhile, in a different parallel universe, Trump's plan to build a wall has been a triumphant success at stemming the tide of immigration. We go live to Bob's parallel duplicate in 2020 to find out what happened. Bob, is it true that immigrants have no way to get through this wall and are forced to remain in Mexico?
Bob: No, we could do the "swim around it" trick from your last joke, but to be honest, why bother. The construction of the wall has done so much damage to the American economy that it is basically a third-world country now. The land of opportunity is no more, and with the roving gangs of murderers looking for minorities to shoot, we honestly feel safer with the cartels now.

It was the most horrifying pairing of our lifetimes.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherHas Trump always looked disgusting? And why didn't he just stay in The '80s where he belongs?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Yeah, I don't think Trump and Reagan would get along.

Leviticus 19:34Most likely, but Lynch had agreed to go along with the opinion of the FBI no matter what it is.
The current director is a a Republican. I'm betting Trump and friends are lining up to offer him positions and prestige under the table if he recommends indiction right before the election in spite of the lack of evidence.

If he thinks it would change the outcome of the election, there's cause to be worried; the prospect of (more) power is something that can change people, and whereas previously Lynch would've shot down anything absurd, that doesn't seem to be the case any more.

From what I've read, many GOP leaders are against Trump because he's hurting the brand with his open Islamaphobia and attacks on immigrants. But I think the bigger reason that they're against him is that he can't be controlled. Who knows. If he picks an experienced and respectable running mate, maybe they can contain him. But Trumps alienated a lot of Americas.
Which is more or less what I meant, but let's not pretend that aside from Trump the GOP is all sunshine and roses. Trumps stance against immigration and Islamaphobia are par for the course. Trump talks about banning all Muslims, but Cruz has already introduced anti-Muslim legislation. Then there's the general problem of businessmen buying up politicians. Things have been moving to the right for a long time now in many Western countries.

Sadly, the Republican party of today has pretty much entered The Tyson Zone - while trying to look up Michele Bachmann's controversial comments about bringing back HUAC (which was most recently echoed by fucking Newt Gingrich, who even I'd have thought above that sort of thing), I stumbled across an article saying that she had recently blamed the "myth" of Global Warming on Muslims who were trying to use it to weaken America's economy before attacking. It took me a few seconds to realize it was from "The Daily Currant", which is in the same vein as The Onion, but the fact that I wouldn't have been too shocked by it is telling.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"

Vanessa Williams was an actress, iirc. I might be mixing her up with Holly Robinson, though.
