Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Tarquin's operating in a different kind of narrative. The thing both your Tarquins and your Walter Whites have in common is that they're both taken out by the protagonist in the end, but with Tarquin the protagonist is the hero and with Walter White the protagonist is Walter White. The Breaking Bad type of story isn't about good triumphing over evil, it's about evil's fuckups and immorality wreaking its own destruction.
Fargo got mentioned, so let's look at how that sucker ended. The crooks are either dead or in jail because of their own greed and stupidity, the money they were after is lost in the middle of nowhere, and the kind-hearted Gundersons get to live happily ever after. Not exactly the bad guy living like a god for three decades.
So how 'bout those US Politics, eh? Trump sure is a short-fingered vulgarian.
Maybe it's just me but I've been noticing that when somebody puts South Park on the political spectrum, it's the opposite of where they themselves are in.
And that's how I ended up in the wardrobe. It Just Bugs Me!
I'm a neo-conservative of some sort, and I don't see South Park as leftist per say. Having said that, every episode of the show I've seen was one hand-selected by my brother who chose them specifically because he agreed with their message.
I haven't seen much of South Park, but this
is actually what it has been described to me as.
Surprisingly it actually represents a LOT of the people I see on the internet, where people are jaded assholes who mock anybody with strong opinions towards social change and if you care about anything strongly you "lose".
I'm not sure how to take that. As far as Warren goes, she's one of the better democrats, though assuming Clinton wins in November she's going to be a bit old to run for President. Which is rather unfortunate. As things stand the democrats are also facing a demographic catastrophe, albeit in the party elite rather than the base.

Unless of course the intent is to kick her upstairs; in that event, they threaten her with a primary behind closed doors unless she takes the position. The lack of any democrats younger than 65 with national appeal is probably the biggest worry for the party. If that doesn't change, the GOP is going to more or less win by default.

Seriously, isn't there some way to punish legislatures that try to pass laws in direct defiance of court rulings? Contempt of court or something?
I hate the Misplaced Nationalism a lot of Americans have. It makes them come off as egotistical and having a superiority complex, and leads to stuff like Trump and Brexit.

But Brexit was British?
And I'd argue Trump wasn't caused by nationalism per say, but rather people who hate politicians.
According to something I read, Americans don't really have as much national pride as some other first world nations. Apparently, the nation with the highest national pride is Canada.

Leviticus 19:34That's because you have people here who are incredibly proud of America, sometimes to the point of doing horrible things, and you have people here who hate our country because of all the shit they've gone through, sometimes to the point of doing horrible things.
In Canada it's more "we've got healthcare and are nice to each other, so I think we've got a swell country."
The US Supreme Court has ruled that Second Amendment rights no longer apply to domestic abusers
.
And why it should be the case
.

With Breaking Bad, etc, I think you're making overly-specific hay out of a universal thing: those characters are interesting. They have conflict woven into their premise. They are probably fascinating to write.
Edit: Ah, the trope I'm looking for: Emotional Torque.
Also, the creatives involved with Wolf of Wall Street emphasized that it's meant to be a satirical take-down of the characters it depicts, not a glorification. (Source: Wikipedia.)
