Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

“Now look! That damned cowboy is president of the United States!”
Just in case you're wondering where the idea of the vice-president being assassination prevention for the current president came from.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Na, he's reading the post correctly. McKinley was assassinated in 1901, after 1865. And the Secret Service was tasked in 1906 with Presidential security.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanUh, if it was "since 1865", and 1901 comes after it, why would he have to remember McKinley since that time frame would include that? (Accusing him of forgetting McKinley only makes sense if McKinley was assassinated BEFORE then.)
I'm starting to think I am the only one who read the post correctly, now.

What's helping, though is that Scotland may very well hold (and succeed) in another vote for Independence in the wake of the Brexit vote
. As the article points out, while the measure to separate from the UK failed, 55-45, Scotland also voted to stay in the EU with a 62-38 split. So depending on how much of that 62% made up that 55% that voted to remain in the UK, a revote on the Independence issue might be drastically different.

I don't think that's ever been a thing in American politics. And it only became a Running Gag in regard to Dan Quayle.
