Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I want to say False Flag Operation and We Need a Distraction from this
[insert video of Trump saying "Campaign budget of" and Dr. Evil finishing "ONE. MILLION. DOLLARS.", to a roomful of laughter and derision]
But we'll have to wait and see.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
It's a consequence of how the media went into absolute hysterics about Trump rather than just laughing at him like the buffoon he is. Unsurprisingly, media casting him as the second coming of Adolf Hitler has had the unfortunate side effect of people acting as if he is the second coming of Hitler. Hence the huge base of neo-fascists, and the occasional assassination attempt.
Now to be fair, Trump actively encouraged this image; his entire campaign was built around the premise that there is no such thing as bad publicity. That worked extremely well in the GOP's primaries. Thus far, it appears to be doing rather poorly among the general electorate.

@Jack: I rather vehemently disagree with that article; in particular the unspoken but implicit notion that we need to pursue a less pluralistic system in order to restrain the "tyranny" of the unwashed masses, and moreover that the political elite are in any way benevolent. They are not. To be fair, neither are the masses; in aggregate, all demographics tend to act out of perceived "self" interest. Thus, without constant pressure from the lower classes, regression and kleptocracy is the natural tendency of the political institutions that compose a government.

The Article's premise isn't entirely wrong.
I remember this one article from years ago, that basically argued most of the recent Congressional dysfunction came about due to the Democrats, in 2007 after taking Congress, purged a lot of pork / rider legislation rules of the House and Senate, which ended a lot of the healthy "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" back and forth. It wasn't clean but it was systematically healthy for the system by giving a Quid Pro Quo on some level for giving both parties reason to Cross the Aisle.
I guess it may be too late but,
that article about Trump supposedly raping a kid 20 years ago has all the markings of sensationalism
. A headline in the form of a question, as well as penultimate paragraph syndrome
There's a movement called "stop clickbait
" that just answers the stupid clickbait without providing a link to it. I don't think it's going to magically fix anything, but it's something.
I thought you all might be amused to hear that there's been reports in Iceland that parliamentary members of the Left Green party have been receiving emails from Donald Trump's address asking them to donate money to his campaign. They insist that it's not a scam and that the emails came from Trump's legitimate campaign address. If it's true, I don't think there's a single more desperate place for an American presidential candidate to search for money than with an Icelandic Left Green Party. It's also quite possibly illegal for him to send these emails — the report mentions that it's illegal for the presidential candidate to receive donations from a non-US citizen.

Since when has Trump ever been concerned with legality? The law doesn't apply to him. He's like Superman; he can leap over tall-building zoning regulations with a single campaign contribution. And now he's spamming for funds, expecting the same in return.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Figures. If it were that easy, someone would've done it a long time ago.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.Earmarks were the glue holding the system together because you could lure someone off of a tricky ideological position with a $500 million payout to their state/district. The Dems were the first ones to go after them, but the spending averse GOP is not going to lead the rally to bring them back. Without them you have little reason to not vote with your conscience, or at least no reason to stray from party lines.

Yeah, the problem with "pork", earmarks, and such, is that it's necessary to the smooth functioning of government. Quid-pro-quo is the grease that keeps the wheels turning. Remove it and the engine seizes up.

I know right? If you even come close to touching an officer's gun, you wouldn't believe how fast they'd react.
