The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]I rather doubt that. Unless he's working for MI-6 or something, there's absolutely no cause for war. You didn't invade Saudi Arabia after 9/11 after all.

I bet we could get rid of that one amendment that allows Congress to set its own pay, which they do on a yearly basis like clockwork.

you doubted someone's testimony here based on testimony from elsewhere that we have no reason to believe is more reliable.

Nor any reason to believe is less reliable. What's good for the goose, et cetera...

You know, the more I watch TYT, the more I believe they truly don't give a shit about progressive values, more so that they know that there is money to be made in anti-Clinton, anti-Democratic videos.

They still haven't made a video on Bernie's FEC violations....hmm....I wonder why.

Has anyone made a video about Bernie's FEC violations? Not exactly a rousing condemnation in and of itself, that. Anyway, they do care about progressive values, it's just their version of progressive values.

Also, one lone nutter murdering a presidential candidate is not actually cause to go to war. It's not like the assassination of Lincoln caused the US to descend into Civil War again. It would have been a scandal, because hey, a famous person died, but nothing so serious as to cause problems between our countries.

Also, one guy in Britain is not exactly a rousing condemnation of either Britain's gun laws or the US's attempt to deal with our gun problem. We have an obsessive fear of government and an obsessive gun culture here that needs to be dealt with. It's unhealthy.

It looks like Trump's campaign has utterly failed to get any sort of coverage in TV advertising. And it might be because the networks only deal with cash up front. They won't deal with someone who tries to pull the "you know I'm good for it!" gambit. Especially since the big networks are terrified of dropping ad revenues, so this is something that no one, absolutely no one, can get them to budge on. Other evidence indicates that Trump's campaign is budgeting as if he was running for mayor in a medium to small sized city, making it likely that he'll flat out run out of money long before the actual election.

Also, Trump is paying himself for being in the campaign, and the biggest single expenditure seems to be the hats he sells.

If Trump had set out to scam the whole country...this would look exactly the same.

I'm honestly confused as to how he'll keep this up for another month, let alone until the general.

It doesn't help that Trump is actually taking donated money (not loaned to him by him, donated) and funneling it into his own companies. That part is a literal scam. He used some of it to pay himself to go on vacation. He is actively defrauding his voter base, and many of them are too blind, stupid, or angry to see it.

Trump is going to get murdered during the fall. And I hope the RNC lets him.

[up][up][up]So basically, Trump is not only insulting every race, creed, and religion, but he's also insulting his own voter base without them even being aware of it? Though considering they've turned a blind eye to Trump's ravings so far, I guess it's really only fitting.tongue

Switching candidates in the middle of a campaign isn't exactly a great endorsement of your political situation. C.f., the Kuomingtang in the most recent Taiwanese election.

Plus, MSNBC already reported that if the primary were held again, most of the GOP primary voters would choose....Trump.

Dumping him at the convention would be an enormous mistake, even if I do agree with they should throw him to the wolves.

I'm always pulled between "it will go well" and "it will be chaos".

Because on the one hand, Trump's campaign is so hamstrung that there's almost nothing they can do.

On the other...well, the primary wasn't "Trump vs. The Field". It was Trump vs. Cruz vs. Kasich vs. Rubio vs. Walker vs. Bush vs. etc.

It's true that more people voted for not-Trump than they did Trump, but someone who would vote for Rubio would not necessarily vote for Cruz, and someone who would vote for Kasich would not necessarily vote for Walker.

I feel like his children might be a little more savvy about this than he is. Eesh. He might wise up but he needs an adviser that's both strong enough and clever enough to get him to listen to the advice.

Considering the wealth of comparison points, Trump needs The Himmler to his Hitler.

He needs a ruthless bureaucratic Chessmaster to manage what he has no talent for.

Problem is, his planetoid size ego won't allow that.

And in all honesty we're the better for it.

So someone mention that there were Republican gun control measures? Anyone care to share what they were? Also what about non gun-control measures, like letting the CDC fund research into gun violence, or letting the ATF use computers for thei records? Even eith gun control measures I assume that despite something like 90% public support there's no movement on attempts to require background checks before buying a gun?

So apparently Trump's fundraising totals are not good.

Apparently according to FEC disclosures he raised $3.1 million in May, loaned himself another $2.2 million, and at the end of the month had $1.3 million in the bank.

Hillary Clinton on the other hand raised $27 million and had $42 million in the bank at the end of the month.

While they were operating on fundamentally different stages of their campaign (Hillary didn't become the presumptive nominee until after the June 7th primaries, while Trump was the presumptive Republican nominee for most of May) even if we assume the article's writer is exactly wrong and these conditions favored Hillary instead of Trump, the sheer magnitude of the difference is striking. If things keep going down this road, Hillary might not need to do any fundraising at all after the convention.
