The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm asking Jack if some of his opinions on China are ones he might have simply gotten from his family more then come to himself after due thought and consideration.

[up][up]Really? (checks article) Well, not so much "apocryphal" as "unconfirmed one way or the other", but it's still hilarious as far as diplomatic correspondence goes. Perhaps that's what inspired Khal Moro's derisive reply to Danerys' lengthy and grandiose self-introduction.

I still prefer the succinct reply of Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe:

To the German Commander:

Nuts!

(signed) The American Commander

Of course, they had to explain to the German emissary what that meant, since he wasn't up on American slang: "In plain English, 'nuts' means the same as 'go to Hell.'"

I prefer the response of greek to Axis power when they demand surrender

"No"

Pretty damn funny

Also I have to clear something here: outsides people dosent like the states because they boast to be "beacon of democracy, freedon and human right" and them deciding the only to do that is with superior firepower, now what people want with Trump is pretty much that, being tought guy who impose is will and stop all that shit

Of course that is bullshit, and is clear is simplistic way to look politic but that is the avarage trumper for you

The Swiss response to the Nazis was pretty awesome too.

The Swiss: "We can mobilize 50,000 men at a moments notice along any of the passes into the centre of the country."

The Nazis: "Then we'll just send in 100,000 men."

The Swiss: "We'll shoot twice."

(I'm pretty sure I got the number wrong, but this gets the point across.)

no, no, no, the best reply has to go "Mad" Jack Churchill, upon hearing the Atomic Bomb had been dropped and the war was over he said "If it wasn't for those damn Yanks, we could have kept the war going another 10 years!"

[up][up]Best? I don't know about that. Certainly the most certifiably bat-shit craziest. This coming from the man who waded ashore on D-Day armed with nothing but a broadsword and a longbow.

Did he and Patton ever meet? I wonder how that encounter would have turned out. Cut from the same cloth, but all the insanity and ego might achieve critical mass...

correction, went onto the beaches yelling "COMAAAAAAANDOOOOOOO!", and it would have ended in a fist fight, what with Patton brining in more troops to end the war quicker and ruin Mad Jack's fun...

[up][up]Oh, excuse me; he wasn't part of the D-Day invasion. He waded ashore in Sicily with his sword, bow, and bagpipes. Then he got captured in Yugoslavia. The SS decided they wanted no part of him.

Looks like the anti-Trump movement within the GOP is serious, at least enough to raise some cash.

Because then otherwise they have no chance of influencing him or the election? For better or worse they're stuck with him for the moment and abandoning the candidate their constituents chose is actually a pretty risky move they don't want to take.

If downticket candidates run against their party's Presidential nominee, it will signal a shellacking akin to what Democrats suffered in 2010 and 2014. That never goes over well with voters no matter who's running.
