The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

How did they know to go to Afghanitan?

They didn't initially, but the personnel knew something was going to happen. Mind you, it only took a few hours for al-Qaeda to be identified as being behind 9/11.

As for me, I don't remember too much about those dark days after 9/11.

[down] And most of those groups were based in the Middle East.

Because the last time the towers were attacked it was Bin Laden wasn't it? And Bin Laden was known to be based in Afganistan.

Hell even just a guess would be enough of a reason to turn them around, there aren't many people who'd carry out such an attack, you'd scramble to be ready to invade all of them and then order an invasion once you'd narrowed the list down from the original 4 or five.

Also I remember hearing they mobilized just about everything, to the point of putting the Nuclear forces on alert. They were really keen on treating this thing like a war from the get go.

Wasn't Al Quaeda also responsible for the attack on the USS Cole just a year before? I'd wager that this kept them warm and present in the US Navy's mind.

Yeah I imagine a general order of "everybody to high alert, if you're near a crazy unstable part of the world get closer because we might need to invade" went out strait away and a "yeah it was Bin Laden, begin shifting troops to near Afganistan in case we need to invade" one a few hours later.

Speaking of Cracked, I saw one of their little photo slideshows once, and one entry was on this report dating to the George H.W. Bush administration about Iraq, saying that it wouldn't be a good idea to invade due to how much of a clusterfuck the country would turn into if Saddam were removed from power. Said report was written by a certain Dick Cheney. Is there any truth to this?

Was that just before Saddam started gassing the Kurds? If memory serves it was.

I have no idea, I just remember noting the irony that Dick Cheney wrote something saying it would be a bad idea to invade Iraq and remove Saddam. Say what you want about the first Bush, but he knew when to fold 'em.

I'll never understand why Bush Sr. has come down in history as a wet noodle. He flew dive-bombers off a carrier during WWII. He was director of the CIA, fer cryin' out loud. He knew first-hand just how terrible all-out war would be, so he quit while he was ahead. And yet Michael "Munchkin" Dukakis said, "Hey, look at the big wimp!" and somehow it stuck.

Gerald Ford came up with that assessment, I think. He considered making Bush his running mate in the 1976 election, but Bush's domestic failures ensured that he didn't get picked.

I've heard the "Bush senior didn't go into Iraq proper because he knew it would be a cluster fuck" story before, not heard the Cheney connection before.

Well I look the video in craked page and is....intersting, I find the mentality of conspiracy theorist a fascinanting thing, like diet version of seria killer.

For what I see, Charlie was a hippie(and he admit itself) an it show by taking of revolution and stuff, once thing dosent add up he back away, Charlotte since the typical "I want a order world" and she become agresive went the idea is brought, almost as the idea of theory should be respect in itself, the indian guy since to use his degree as validation of itself rather to investigate

In way I can see how people will come to some point: the US killing is own population is not strange consider what all kind of crap they pull on latin america and middle east country or them own population before, also is this idea of goverment being abstract subject that can do anything, at best "the goverment" become pretty much magic: they can do whatever they fucking want and dosent need to explain shit

But as Charlie said, is pretty much a religion in itself: the idea have end goal, they use patch here and there to made ad-hoc theory, and in sense they mantain the feeling of certeinity they cannot get otherwise, in sense what they really said is "I lost faith in you and now I have something else, give me faith or leave"

Is there any ficcion with show this side of conspiracy theorist? the closet I have seen is Ronaldo of Steven universe, to surprise of no one, is consider the scrappy by all the fans, what surprise

George Bush is known as a wuss because he wore glasses and didn't look like your typical "badass." He wasn't as charismatic as Regan or Clinton, and was culturally out of touch with the average American.

Apparently the NRA thinks Trump's gun policies are nuts. I guess even they realize that a crowded place with lots of noise, little light, with almost everyone is drunk and firearms don't mix.
