Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Remember that at the time, no one had any inkling that Bernie would take off like he did. It was fair to work on the assumption that she would get the nomination in a cakewalk. If this was sent in, say, February of this year, that would make me raise an eyebrow.
@Angelus Knox
Shame for everyone who's been shot with the legal one too. But hey, I wouldn't want to get in the way of your gun collection or anything.
Seriously this is an attitude I just don't get. You can have a weapons' collection and an extensive one at that, that doesn't include a semi-auto rifle with a magazine of that size.

Hardly. If you want controversial coronation politics, look no further than 2008, when it failed. This was a cakewalk for Clinton by comparison.
Seriously, anyone who imagines that this primary represents some kind of break in Democratic politics that shows the corruption of the insider system and how we're about to undergo a revolution driven by the progressive populist wing has a ridiculously short memory.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"To break from the inane and unproductive gun debate, a news digest
. Topics are whether Trump or Hillary receive more credit for handling terrorism issues and also Sanders voters.
I'm sure Fox News will try to make something of it, but when don't they? Maybe Trump will run his mouth, but when doesn't he? Calm yourself.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Also, this was with the media. Television, maybe radio, etc.
Bernie was hinging on the youth vote, and they aren't likely to watch CNN or listen to radio shows. They're going to go online and spread the word there, which they did. Had Hillary not been supported on tv as much, the results wouldn't have changed too drastically. Older adults aren't interested in a "political revolution" and his message would have fallen flat on it's face.
@Fighteer: In 2008, both of the major candidates were party princelings, and while Obama got flak from the party brass at the time for cutting his place in line, Sanders place in this election was more that of Howard Dean, the token left-wing candidate expected to get 5% of the vote in Iowa and drop out.

Besides the fact that I Love Dogs may have a point, this being relatively early in the primary season, I found this part especially interesting:

I'll tell you what I would tell anyone: you are free to believe what you want, but if you vote for Trump out of spite, you are not any kind of progressive, and if Clinton loses because people stayed home, you have only yourself to blame.
Because the idea exists that using the establishment finance system makes you a corrupt tool of said system, and that affects votes. Duh.

I have said numerous times that I am not voting for Trump. As for my other point, the democrats are free to ignore the way the wind is blowing among younger voters, but they'll be in the same boat as the GOP twenty years down the line when their voting base is in danger of collapsing.

Not voting for Clinton is the same thing as voting Trump in swing states. Refusing to vote for her on principle means those voters really don't care about minorities, peace, income inequality, LGBT people, immigrants and the global economy.
Anyone who won't vote for Clinton never truly believed in Sanders message. Being a democratic socialist and accepting Trump in the White House are mutually exclusive.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It would be nice if Clintonists didn't mock and deride Sanderists at every opportunity. The spite isn't so much at Sanders losing, but rather at the condescending treatment from the Clinton side. It's kind of like this thing where Democrats are said to feel entitled to the black vote because they give blacks the occasional cookie whereas the GOP slaps them in the face, but some people feel very sour that they are taken for granted, and guilted and shamed into voting for one smug "lesser evil" after another.
Seriously, you need to stop that.
Why say "muddy the waters" rather than something like "address the voters' concerns" or "clarify our position" or "establish our moral high ground"?

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.@Ambar Sonof Deshar shame for all those people who needed one and didn't have one, it is not like the US had more self defense cases with a firearm that it does have gun deaths, including suicides totaling 235,700 cases in a 4 year period.
Besides I am not American, I live in a shithole where guns are practically banned but still roam around in the hand of criminals and I've been in situations where I've had to resort to self defense. Besides I enjoy shooting firearms and I enjoy having the option to defend myself. Sorry but not everyone lives in plushyland where everyone is polite and crime is unheard off.
