Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. But he regenerated in another planet entirely!
Seriously, vote Loki. He's hilarious.
Meh Cthulhu is so old news, I would prefer Nyarko or Yogg Saron. At least it would be funny crazy.
But anyway the whole debate on what happened in Orlando is probably best left up to another thread.

Orlando club shooter bought guns from store owned by ex-NYPD cop
Also, a blog post that led me to that article:
THE RADICALIZATION OF GUN STORE OWNERS IS COMPLETE
I can't help but feel there is a lot of irony here. An anti-Muslim gun nut, going by info, legally sold a weapon to a Muslim man who used it in an act of terrorism. Ironic both on who sold it and in the fact that the transaction was done without apparent discrimination, which is something people have been advocating for.

I don't see exactly what the second article's point it. An ex-cop has some strong Islamophobic tendencies and accidentally sold a gun to an ISIS recruit. That isn't exactly "radicalization" per say.

Leviticus 19:34Rachel Maddow bit on the gun used in the shooting
. Sig Sauer advertises it on the basis of it folding up and being easily silenced.
Sig Sauer does actually advertise the MCX as being as concealable and quiet as possible. Going so far as to sell it chambered in .300 Blackout, a specialized cartridge made for suppressors. It was originally made for NATO special forces by the company AAC.
And like Handle says, these are not weapons or bullets made for self defense.

Oh really when? The focus on the weapon is kind of missing the point. When you walk into a public place and start shooting, concealability and noise are not a factor. People are going to figure out what's going on real quick regardless of whether the gun is fitted with a silencer or whatever else. The sort of shooting we're talking about (very close range, very tight quarters), the difference between a rifle and a handgun and whatever else isn't much. "That's obviously not for self-defense!" is a spurious argument because "for self-defense" is a meaningless phrase. Being quiet is just as nice for not shattering your own eardrums when you're shooting on the range as it is for shooting up a bunch of innocent people. You can read any feature list in any damn way you want.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. The issue is how he was able to arrive at the scene to begin his rampage without being detected. If he snuck the gun into the club, then its concealability becomes a factor. If he started shooting at the entrance, then the story is a little different, but surely he was seen by people as he traveled to the site and exited whatever vehicle he used. Nobody saw an "Arabic" man carrying an assault rifle? Given our cultural paranoia, certainly someone who did would have thought to call the cops.
The point is that the shooter bought a semi-automatic rifle that is specifically advertised for its portability and concealability. Such weapons have no business being sold to consumers.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Concealing an assault rifle is a big issue, if it wasn't so concealable people would have noticed before the gun was drawn. Possibly giving enough warning to have allowed something to happen to save lives.
But quite a few states allow people to go wherever with a machine gun on their shoulder and it is against the law to even say anything about it, unless the person is black then he is considered a threat, including places like Walmart or clubs.
