Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

advancing the front into TV Tropesbah, we shall install a larger graphics card, up the RAM, and out in a more powerful processor and crush the badly tanned walrus once and for all!
oh, and not being racist/sexist/homophobic/islamophobic/mocking the disabled is not being PC, it's called not being an utter cockwomble
advancing the front into TV Tropes
Did you read the article? And while many bigots, like Trump, do use "PC" as a scapegoat, it often gets out of control, especially on college campuses. And of course their is the circular logic some of them use, defending yourself is proof of guilt, and that certain people cannot argue against certain other people taking offense against them, e.g. if a person of color says your racist your racist no matter what. And it is impossible to get them to explain their positions to normal people because to have them do it in a civl way would be "tone policing."
I dunno, seems too mild an insult to describe Trump, if ya ask me...
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.I'd argue it's the other way around-Trump owes his success partially due to frustration with poorly-executed political correctness.
Trump is not the answer, however, since he's outright bigoted rather than simply having a spine. In fact, he's actually more jellyfish than human. Of course, another problem with bad PC is that actual bigots can claim to be the victims of Political Correctness Gone Mad.

Have you, like, actually set foot on a college campus? The "PC college student" meme is rapidly approaching austerity in terms of brain-eating capabilities.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotSo on the gun control issue, I feel that mass shootings, especially in the United States, are no longer preventable (if they ever were to begin with). The culture of fear, easy access to guns, and fierce opposition against any and all gun control regulation in America make it the perfect breeding ground for mass shootings. Ultimately, as a result, I fear that mass shootings are now unavoidable and impossible to effectively prevent in the United States.

Yeah, anecdotes disingenuously presented as fact by people unhappy that they can't say "kill the kikes" in public anymore. And unable to tell when a joke has been run into the ground.
I think that the will exists, but most politicians would rather choose some other hill to die on. If Social Security is considered the third rail of American politics, what analogy would work for firearms?
Little thing for fun and since it came up earlier (in fact it lines up with my prior morbid-but-amusing thought), a post on facebook by stand up comic Alonzo Bodden

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.I talked to someone today who said that in his view (anthropology professor) a big chunk of the US population is going through active cultural degeneration. Self-destructive behaviour, a total inability to look ahead and try and predict the results of their behaviour, and, of course, a collapsing education system. I...can't really disagree with that, but hopefully there are enough people who aren't going through that process to (mostly) reign in those who are.
Got linked to this article
on the weapon he was using. Don't know if other people have seen it. I'm just glad to have a working name for the damn thing.
So, the Orlando situation got even more complicated: LA Times reports that the shooter was a regular at the Pulse before the attack, and had profiles on gay dating apps
.
Jack: The whole college thing was blown WAY out of fucking proportion. There was an incident on one college. One famous college. There are hundreds to thousands of colleges across the US where shit like that doesn't happen, or if it does happen it's not even considered news enough to get on the national stage. Don't make that thing bigger than it was.
Crossing post an article I posted on the LGBT/Religion thread earlier.
After Orlando, time to recognize that anti-gay bigotry is not religious freedom

Every religion and segment of society needs to clamp down on this stuff if we don't want another Pulse atrocity.

It is ground for finding a good excuse for impeachment, though.
