The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think one of the Paris attackers was reportedly gay as well. Bizarre.

Part of it is that the US populace is somewhat Wrong Genre Savvy in regards to Right Wing Militia Fanatics and counter-terrorism. Basically, a common accusation of the US government is that it's an oppressive empire that labels freedom fighters "terrorists" and seeks to use counter-terrorism as an excuse to institute a police state. With Islamist attacks, foreign influence can be blamed. However, Reactionary Militias are able to exploit Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters for all it's worth, since that's a tenet of their ideology.

The US Government acknowledging their existence could easily be spun as the US Government declaring war on its own people-particularly those claiming to fight for American ideals and freedom, so it'd be a terrible PR move on their part and would play into their hands.

Yeah in the end the fact that the guy taken alive trying to carry out a second attack isn't being called a terrorist probably has something to do with skin colour.

I wish Obama would have gone full no shits, just stood up and said "yesterday we suffered a terrorist attack, a second attack was attempted but the suspect is now in custody", strait up connect the two in front of the world and dare anyone to challenge him.

@The Handle: It is kind of a Morton's Fork, since being labeled terrorists is exactly what they want.

Having said that, the insurgents themselves run into an opposite Morton's Fork-the only way for them to achieve their goals would be to use morally abysmal tactics like Al-Qaeda. This would play into the US government's hand, since it would prove the government right. Had the Ted Bundy guys ran in and shot a bunch of defenseless citizens unprovoked, the US government would have come down on them like an angel of death.

So, they're at an impasse: they need to provoke the government to label them terrorists for doing something relatively minor. The Genre Savvy government has wisely refused to take the bait.

CNN: Donald Trump revokes the press credentials of the Washington Post

Ooooooh boy, I can't wait to see how hard he gets roasted for this. Journalists (like actual journalists, not Breitbart) hate this kind of shit. This will go over worse than calling a reporter a sleaze.

He'll welcome their hate, that's for sure. Just another reason to ban more of them for "bias."

To be fair, the Washington Post was stretching it a bit by claiming he suggested that Obama was involved in the massacre, when he was very clearly suggesting that Obama was only a terrorist sympathizer.

[up][up]Well, if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black...

Then again, nobody knows "phony and dishonest" better than Trump, so I guess he's eminently qualified to pass judgment.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said in a statement, "A candidate for the highest elected office in the land doesn't get to choose what goes into a newspaper."

I wonder when the media will go full scorched Earth mode.

They HAVE to realize the danger he poses to them as a institution with all the things he's been insinuating.

The Scariest part of Trump's terrorism speech Christ American's opinion about Islam is now worse than it was right after 9/11. Honestly I thought things might have gotten better, probably because I started hanging out with a more left wing crowd.

I'm still waiting to hear what his plan is for the Muslims that are already here, if he bothers going beyond "we have to keep a closer eye on them."

I also wouldn't be surprised if he eventually explicitly claims that not a single terrorist attack will ever happen under his reign, instead of implying it.

[up][up]I know but for Christ sake Marvel made a Muslim a part of the Avengers. Now I wonder if they'll cut her out of her planed role in the MCU, they showed similar gutlessness with Tibetans. And how did popular perceptions of them get worse than after 9/11? My only theory is that every time the media "lets them off" after another terrorist attack, i.e spending more time assuring us of the goodness of Muslims than reporting on the actual victims.

[up] The thing about Tibetans is that Marvel can't mention them if they wanted access to the Chinese Box Office. America does not have similar restrictions in regards to Muslims.

I would think that even conservative judges would strike down those restrictions as blatant 1st Amendment violations; even accounting for the fact that the American judicial system is a politicized circus.
