Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The "ban lifted" article says it's still "12 months since the last sexual contact" which pretty much rules out any gay men in an active relationship. (I'm guessing the original was put in place in the early days of the AIDS epidemic when AIDS was still thought to be a homosexual thing.)
If Hillary is presenting herself as Obama 2.0 and Obama didn't touch it even when he had a Dem majority in Congress to work with, I doubt it. The mere speculation that Obama would do something sent the gun nuts into a tizzy. The issue is political kryptonite.

@Doctor Dougsh
It is the largest mass shooting. What I'm mourning is that in future discussions about terrorism and Islam, idiots will no doubt resort to "Muslims carried out the largest mass shooting in American history" as evidence they are uniquely bad while ignoring that most of the shootings just below it in bodycount were carried out by white Christians.

I'd just like to thank you all for being not terrible. The rest of the internet is currently a tire fire.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote? That's definitely an exaggeration, but I wouldn't be surprised if he sees a jump in the polls.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company. If the terrorists get us to go on an internal pogrom against Islam, they've won.

If he could get away with it, I don't doubt that Trump would argue for removing the Muslims that are already here (except maybe for the rich ones, of course).
He already wants to remove over 11 million illegal immigrants, what's another 3.3 million Muslims?
They easily fit the same basic criteria: "We can't trust them, we've seen what they've done, they're clearly dangerous, they've got to go, etc."
The only hard part would be finding a place to put them, since we can't just shove them south of the border and be done with it. Maybe shove them north instead, to rub it in those bleeding-heart's liberal faces.

If Trump gets elected, it won't just be Muslims running north (and south)...
Statement from Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada on the shooting: https://www.facebook.com/notes/justin-trudeau/statement-by-the-prime-minister-of-canada-on-the-tragic-shooting-in-orlando-flor/10154373785880649

In non-shooting news: Sanders and Clinton will be meeting after the D.C. primary on Tuesday. Hopefully this means Sanders is ready to call it quits.

Unless I am mistaken, I don't think many called Anders Breivik a terrorist, despite him getting a higher death count than there was in Orlando and repeatedly mentioning how his attacks were meant to send a message to the Western civilization.
Is it really that bad on the rest of the internet? This is the only place I ever have political conversations, apart from school and parents. I mean it appears nobody in my world has even heard of the shooting, which is it's own kind of sad. Still, the last gun control legislation was only passed because the Black Panthers got their hands on fire arms, so if anything is going to get us to tighten our gun laws it's the prospect of Muslims getting into the whole shooter thing.
Edit: I'm pretty sure the Charleston guy was labeled as a "domestic terrorist" by at least the government and CNN

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Grabbing sanders for VP might not be a terrible choice if they figure it'd keep his people showing up but I see a few problems with that math
1: He can't even muster up those folks to make him the nominee
2: He'd be a liability come the generals
3: Elizabeth Warren is basically a shoe-in
Right-wingers tend to get a huge boost from terror attacks, Israel has basically been a right-wing haven since the president who drafted the oslo accords got assassinated. If Trump has any sense he'll be making this attack the center of his campaign and he just might win on it.
Obama could soften the blow if he came out hard against ISIS but I doubt there's much else he can do outside of organizing a ground invasion and I can't even imagine the clusterfuck that would be.
Clinton could probably rally around the guns issue if she's trying to get this out of the air as fast as possible. Make even a peep about guns and the NRA throws a shitfit that makes everything else quiet in comparison.

There's already memes.
A more conservative person I know on facebook posted one of a pro-gay protest/parade type thing advocating unity and saying no to racism/bigotry/islamophobia. Underneath is a caption "Should we tell them, or let them discover the truth for themselves"
Thinking on it, that could pre-date the shooting, even so... ugh.
One that probably doesn't was one pointing out how many casualties there were then noting that Obama would blame Republicans and Guns.

RE: Rest of the internet
I just had to ban a former friend on Facebook because he decided to attack a gay guy who was defending Muslims from Islamaphobic attacks.
EDIT: In an effort at cheering everyone up, anyone else seen Clinton's Trump University Infomercial
?

FDA still turns away queer folk donating blood.
I thought that ban had been lifted?
