Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think it's been reported than many attackers like this one weren't particularly religious before they were radicalised (they lawyer hired to defend one of the Paris attackers claimed that he hadn't even read the Qaran). I think, typically, it has more to do with disaffection and alienation resulting in resentment against western society — in that sense, it makes sense that he'd attack something he'd be likely to see as quintessentially "western".
Almost exactly what I thought: this attack has more in common with classic, lone wolf shootings by middle class white males than a more "typical" islamist terrorist move.
In a bizarre, dark and disgusting way, this attack proves how well assimilated this guy was.

CNN are reporting that the guy called the emergency services just before and pledged his loyalty to ISIS, so it may turn out to be an ISIS inspired action if nothing else.
Just like with the Belgium attackers it seems we've got a second generation guy doing the attack, he was born the US, his parents weren't. This may well be a twiste way for him to rebel against the parents that "gave in to western decadence".
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSomething for the "I don't want to be part of this species anymore" people: after public calls for people to donate blood to help manage the crisis, Orlando blood banks have seen such an enormous turnout that they've reached capacity and are asking people to return over the next few days instead of standing in line today
. There are pictures of people lined up around the block
◊ and through parking lots
.
Even though some people are assholes, a much, much larger number of people are willing to go out of their way to help others.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. It was the same after Boston, I wonder if it's possible to get emergency mobile blood banks set up to handle such a donation overload, they could be scrambled during an emergency for eith the delivery of blood to locations in need or the storage of donated blood in the case of excess.
As I suspect that a lot of people won't return tomorrow, and that blood could do a lot of good if gotten.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo, about the shooter's father...
Edit- For context, he's a kook who praises the Taliban. Seems like partly an ethnic thing RE regions in Pakistan vs Afghanistan, but he's kind of the worst person to vouch that his son's violence was not religiously motivated.

I also have to note in fairness that the guy's father's praise of the Taliban sounds (from that article) like it exclusively had to do with their fighting the Pakistani government on account of some ethno-religious ties.
He wasn't praising actions by the Taliban targeted at the United States/"The West".
So, there isn't a contradiction between his bizarre talk show and him not supporting his son committing terrorism/a hate crime in the United States.
I'm just waiting for the retaliatory attacks to start on random Muslims (or Sikhs/Hindus/random brown looking people, cause that tends to happen with this sort of shit).
And yeah, this guy sounds like your classic ISIS inspired attacker; not much different from the guys who hit Paris/Brussels/Ottawa/San Bernardino.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It seems to be the case with the Orlando shooter that he was just very homophobic and not religious at all, although he was snooping around jihadi sites in the past couple years. His declaration of allegiance to ISIS could just be a way of delivering a quick mission statement before he went on the attack.

I'm sorry. But if you willingly vote for Donald Trump, you're a racist asshole. Through and through. Period.
New Survey coming this weekend! Was going to comment on that. I think it weighs against my concerns about Trump being capable of self-control.
Like I can't believe someone would actually say that they "appreciates the congrats" for being right about Islamic terrorism.
Although still obviously Islamophobic, I think everyone else expressing that sentiment would say something to the effect that they are "sorry for being right".
But not Trump.
He's got to have Narcissistic personality disorder.

Oh, everyone knows that Trump has an ego that's big enough to generate its own gravity well.
And yeah, that last tweet seals the deal. I don't think I could honestly remain friends with anyone who voted for Trump (if I had friends that did). Hell, I'd probably disown family members if they supported him.

There aren't any sources about ISIS taking credit for this are they?
