Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Orlando nightclub shooter has been ID'd as one Omar Saddiqui Mateen, news sources are reporting.
The fallout from this is going to fun, I can tell.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)
not sure how serious you're being there. If you are serious, a lot may depend on how the candidates and others react, I'd think.
EDIT: I just had a morbid-yet-amusing thought that, to be honest, I worry might be out of line to actually share...
I'm opting to spoiler tag it and if it is out of line, say the word and I'll edit it out entirely.
Can the GOP denounce this as an act of terrorism without, intentionally or otherwise, also appearing to be sympathetic to the LGBT community?

Trump's response on Twitter:
Now if only he could make all his tweets like this. (Immediately after this one, he went back to bashing Clinton for her attack ads.)
Edit: The death toll has been bumped up to 50, making this the worst mass shooting in the U.S. EVER.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)I'm watching the press conference. Shooter was Omar Mateen, in his late 20s, who is an American citizen but not an Orlando local (he's from Port St. Lucie, which is a couple hours south of Orlando). He has family members who are not US citizens, but they declined to say what their nationality is. (All of this was mentioned before the press conference officially started and was not repeated by anyone — they're officially withholding even his name, though that cat seems to be out of the bag, so I'm not sure why they're bothering.) They updated the death toll from around 20 to more than 50, with 53 victims hospitalized. They mentioned that the initial responding officers exchanged fire with the gunman, and they credited the SWAT team with saving at least 30 hostages from inside the club. One officer was injured (a SWAT officer who was shot in the head, but was wearing a kevlar helmet that prevented the bullet from penetrating). So far it appears to have been a lone wolf sort of thing with no clear connections between the shooter and any organizations, but that investigation is still ongoing. Weapons used was a handgun and an AR-15. Initial shots were just after 2:00 AM, additional shots were exchanged when SWAT went in at 5:00 AM, and there was some communication between the shooter and authorities during that time, but they aren't releasing any details yet.
Sorry for the terrible formatting, writing stuff as it's mentioned on TV.

That won't stop terrorists — just look at Paris and The Troubles.

Beahahaha- oh, you're serious.(?)
Black comedy aside, have any of the shootings thus far resulted in meaningful gun control? San Bernardino is the next worst recent one I can think of, those guys were terrorists (where here it's still up in the air) and I've heard nothing of the sort resulting from it.

Gun control? Lawl that is never going to happen, more than likely it will lead to more guns instead.
Very likely it will be just another excuse for racism, just going by the name alone, and give Trump more supporters. He could very well win because of this via just fear mongering.

And an increase in Pink Pistols

You've a point with that thought, though. Trump and the GOP's ability to bank on this is going to be somewhat limited because framing this as an attack on Western values is implicitly admitting LGBT rights as essentially western/American. They're likely going to have to dance around that issue and downplay just where the attack took place in their statements. I expect Clinton will go the opposite route and emphasise this as a hate crime against homosexuals.

I think we're figuring that it was because it was a gay club, but that's our assumption.
