The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well everyone in American politics is almost unconditionally supportive of Israel, it's a requirement to play the game.

I hate the current Israeli government too but I can't afford to hate every American politician over it.

Nor can I pretend that it's a problem we can solve overnight or with presidential authority. It'd have to be a complete restructuring of our hard and soft power in the middle east.

The simple fact is that none of the accusations against Hillary or her husband have ever been proven in a court of law

Here's a common, well-documented accusation: Clinton's a hawk and her interventions seem to do more harm than good.

I think tbey mean "accusations of doing illegal things", not "accusations of being warmongering assholes".

@Sanders has lost: yeah, yeah, let's be polite and wait until the vote at the convention. I mostly want to hear Sanders' speech.

I really don't like the media jumping the gun on this sort of thing and naming victors too soon. 2001 still remains fresh in my mind.

And a few more articles over AJE having no journalistic integrity when it comes to the Syrian conflict.

I thought about saying something just now, I thought about trying to get the last word in, but nope, that would be stupid. I am going to try to force myself to not just stop posting in this thread, but to stop looking at it so I'm not tempted to post.

RE: TYT

We just had a long talk about this. Cenk is an Armenian genocide denier. He has never fully retracted those views. He cannot get on his high horse about anything while denying—for nationalist, non-progressive reasons to boot—the massacre of somewhere between 600 000 and 1.5 million people. That he continues to get on his high horse while denying the genocide and running a show named after the guys who perpetrated genocide is repugnant on every possible level.

Yeah, he's not in any position to complain about any sort of atrocity when he still denies the Armenian genocide.

That it's also always Israel he complains about makes me awful suspicious as well. Clearly he's not opposed to ethnic conflict and destruction on principle so it makes me wonder why he's so upset about Israel.

Donald Trump is inspiring bullying of minorities in schools with his stupid talk.

His behavior has made it normal to sling slurs and mockery based on race and religion. Kids are mimicking what the adults do.

Found this while lurking in the Libertarian threads on Facebook. Seems like it will get the gun-folk riled up for the next few weeks. http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2016/06/09/ninth_circuit_rules_no_constitutional_right_to_concealed_carry_of_firearms.html

[up]Hard to tell. Trump's erratic enough that it ranges from "standard Republican BS" to "Great Depression and a half dozen wars".

Al-Jazeera, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch

All pretty good, though Al-Jaz has its biases when it comes to Palesitne Israel, so one should be carful. I'd consider junking the rest.

Yes I know we moved on, but I figured someone should answer for any lurkers.

Oh as for the idea that Fighteer thumps people for disagreeing with him, please, Shinra and I have had all sorts of very intense arguments with Fighteer, we're both still here.

There's a difference between being an ass and disagreeing with someone who happen to be a mod, if folks can't tell the difference then that's their problem.

Al Jazeera is generally pretty okay when you get away from the Middle East. It's sort of like the BBC in that way. They get more neutral the less the topic has to do with their hot-button topics. Somewhere like Fox News will put everything under their spin, while something like Al-Jazeera usually won't bother.

[up] I've dealt with actual rich people in one of my previous jobs. They will try to get everything exact down to the cent because they don't want to get overcharged, but they won't stiff you, because they usually have too much pride to do that.

Al-Jazeera is worth watching as long as it ain't about the Middle East. And even then there are areas where they can be seen.

Some of the other sources that guy linked are pretty far out there though. TYT's the one I'm most familiar with, but they've all got issues. I think people often confuse "talks about stories other people don't" or "presents things from a perspective that others don't" with "reliable and honest". And of course that ain't how it works.

So on the subject of TYT - Germany has officially recognized the Armenian Genocide.

[down]

Edited to correct that. However, in response, Turkey pulled it's ambassador out of Germany within hours of the vote to recognize the genocide.

One of the few national governments, international organisations from the western world as well as local governments recognise it in large numbers.

[up][up]A friend of mine linked me to that a while back, with a joke about how, with Cenk and co. being such progressives they would surely celebrate this decision on their show.

Personally, I tend to steer clear of any news source that seems more focused on producing opinion pieces then on straight-facts reporting. Partly because I don't want a biased source of information, partly because I'm a natural contrarian who can't here someone argue for their position without wanting to point out a dozen and one ways that they're wrong.

I try to aim for sources that can be considered neutral or at least not so blatantly biased I can't take them seriously. To that end I tend to rely on Reuters most. Their articles can be sparse but I haven't gotten a feeling like they're trying to go one way or another too much. Also started looking at AP a bit.

[up][up] I'll admit I only skimmed the article, but the author doesn't exactly come off as the most unbiased source.

Regardless, the sense I'm getting is that some sort of arrangement was made when Bernie and Obama met today, one that both Bernie and Obama were happy with. Something as simple as reforming the convention rules to make the Democratic Party more (rather than less) open to outsider candidates in the future would be pretty significant.
