The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And those who distrust the government would also dislike holding cops, the arm of the government that enforces law which gives them power over the common man, accountable for their actions.

[up] Most of those that refuse to hold cops accountable are...surprise surprise, overwhelmingly white.

Gee, I wonder why they'd implicitly support police brutality

[up]No one said or implied anything contrary to that so I don't really get the sarcasm.

Question, has police brutality been getting worse over the years, or just more publicity that makes it seem like it's getting worse as is the common perception of crime in general.

It's always been this bad.

People of color have been complaining about police brutality for decades, but no one believed them. Now that we have the assholes on video...well, yeah, things are changing.

Ye, and there's also the tiny little detail of the lack of accountability...like, your negligence kills a black guy Well, here's a slap on the wrist. Don't do it again.

I wouldn't even have the issues I do with police unions if the other parts of the system were working like they should..

Are there any actual statistics on that? I don't really trust people's memories on that kind of thing (not even my own). I'd expect police incidents to be more frequent when crime rates are higher, and crime has, as a general trend, been declining sharply since the early '90s, after peaking in the '80s.

Just because crime is decreasing doesn't mean police are less likely to kill minorities. That'll happen regardless, until they start being held accountable and actually get their badges taken away and sent to prison.

Again: do you actually have any numbers on that, or are you just saying so because it seems true to you?

I'm not saying that it's not true, but I dislike making factual claims without any actual facts in evidence.

American highway patrols seem to be acting like your typical 3rd world police department; without the usual excuse (they need to take bribes/steal shit because their pay is dirt).

There are several laws out there that prevent people from actually gathering numbers on that, even when it's their own police forces trying to gather data.

IIRC the Federal Government doesn't even know how many police departments there are in the US.

Everything about the way we treat cops is backwards. They have power over us, but have zero accountability for their actions. A badge shouldn't be a pass to kill people, it should be a privilege that's taken away the minute you fuck up.

I'm a minority. I despise cops, for the most part. Almost every interaction I've had with one validates it.

I can't feel that way but then again I've never been in a particularly bad situation with a cop. I also have to image that, statistically most aren't terrible, but again, I can think like that because I've never had a particularly bad experience myself.

Got linked to this old Clinton/Obama interview. People often claim that the two don't like each other and are only allied for political reasons. Now I know full well how bad things got during the 2008 primaries, but that was a long time ago, and looking at this? I don't see people who dislike each other. Now maybe they're just fabulous actors (they are politicians after all) but they'd have to be pretty damn good.

Long-time lurker here, and just wanted to comment on this:

More to the point, if Sanders was a woman, he wouldn't have even gotten off the ground. Unless someone thinks a 74 year old, white independent woman from Vermont who calls herself a socialist would've gotten mainstream democratic support by being anti-establishment

Yes, imagine an old, white, progressive woman from the north-east fixated on income inequality and combatting Wall Street, who became a member of the Democratic party fairly recently, gaining national popularity...

Although it would have been funny seeing Clinton trying to pitch 'Eliza Bros'.

In other words: the constant framing of the majority of Bernie Sanders supporters as sexist (and racist) is getting really tiresome, and frankly, also quite immature - it kills any attempt to intelligent discussion.

@Ambar: I disagree with your statement that the right has more guns than the left does right now. After all, when the Right-Wing Militia Fanatic types rebel, they have to deal with either a quick and brutal - or worse, a slow and humiliating - response from a military force under the authority of a center-center Commander-in-Chief who is very committed to preserving our constitutional government.

So by all means, bring on the (failed) revolution.

Sanders Sisters

To be clear, I was talking about Elizabeth Warren. Seeing that Sanders and Warren share largely the same core of supporters, this makes accusations of them being sexist even more ridiculous.

To be clear: I agree that there might be some subconscious sexism involved with certain criticisms of Hillary Clinton (for example, regarding her personality). But saying that the majority of Bernie supporters support him just because he is male is absurd, and almost any criticism regarding Clinton is being called 'sexism' by her supporters and the Clinton campaign itself (see 'Bernie Bros'), which simply kills the discussion.

When has the Clinton campaign called Sanders' criticisms sexist, outside of perhaps the "is she qualified?" thing?

Sure there are supporters (especially online) who will declare anything sexist, but they're a vocal minority, much like the rabidly sexist Sanders supporters.
