Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I await the day they go all the way and fully dox someone.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot![]()
What, do you actually think Clinton and/or Trump would introduce conscription to stop ISIS?
I hate those scumbags so very much. They might as well be giving out targeting information to whatever radical decides to go Army of God on a clinic/researcher/doctor.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.@Rational: Obviously not, but the probability of a given person having a friend or family member in the military is fairly high given the rate of service in the US. Either way, Clinton seems to be in favor of large scale military intervention in the middle east against ISIS. As I've said before, I think that's a terrible idea, as the inevitability of a protracted and brutal guerrilla campaign means political support for the war effort will falter rather quickly.
@Aces: My best friend from high school and my favorite uncle both died in Iraq, and I have a cousin who came home maimed. I am being absolutely sincere about this.

Pros and Cons of Sanders staying in the race: http://www.theonion.com/graphic/arguments-and-against-bernie-sanders-staying-rac-52977
There's no stomach for a large scale ground war in the Middle East; at most Clinton would step up airstrikes and special forces missions. More likely she'll stick to Obama's tactics.
And that opinion of yours called for a highly insensitive comment about someone's friends and family? No, no it did not. There is a way to phrase such opinions appropriately, and that was not it.
And, sorry about your family, but that still doesn't justify a spiteful sounding comment about someone else's, for fuck's sake. Appropriateness is a fucking thing, dude. It just looks like you took a potshot at someone specifically because she's happy Clinton won. We don't have the context for your comment, nor should we have to for you to be polite about your disapproval on this forum.

Believe it or not, I was being very sincere, and I strongly protest the thump for that reason; I know a fair number of people who served in Iraq. The prospect of us going back chills most of them to the bone despite most of them no longer being in the military, and honestly, I find it absolutely disgusting how eager some of the people are to send thousands of people to their deaths. Especially those people who won't have to personally feel the burden of the war in the form of family or friends coming home maimed or not coming home at all.

Eh, we'll probably hear something tomorrow. What we'll hear is anyone's guess, but it will be something.
Has it occurred to you that we think Clinton is the best way to avoid further war? Because that's not something that anyone here has actually expressed a desire to do. To help out and clean up the damn mess we caused by fucking it up in the first place, yes, but not to get involved in another war. There are reparations to be made on our part. That, you know, would help to avoid war further down the line.

Just because you have Freudian Excuse doesn't make what you said less assholish.

I was being completely serious; I desperately hope that Clinton decides against returning to the middle east in force, for reasons I have stated before I believe it would be an absolute disaster, beyond the horrific human cost of a long term intervention in the region.

Also would it still be possible for him to get a contested convention even with Clinton as the supposed nominee? Or are all of the other primaries just cancelled now?
