Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Things named after Andrew Jackson don't go bankrupt as often as things named after Donald Trump?
Wizard Needs Food BadlyWell, Jackson wanted to bankrupt the nation by abolishing non-gold currency. So...
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm not sure that Trump actually has any economic ideas, other than, "Give me more money."
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Jackson also didn't go through wives like boxes of chocolate the way Trump does. Jackson's wife Rachel was accused of being a bigamist due to the circumstances of her marriage to Jackson (I don't know the full story), and Jackson never got over how much grief his opponents gave them for it, nor did he get over her death, blaming it on his rivals breaking her heart. Like, Trump is pretty much a career narcissist who probably wouldn't give a shit about you if you fulfilled your usefulness to him. Jackson had people he gave a damn about and legitimately cared for.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Trump's economic ideas come from what he sees on his Twitter feed. He's a complete ignoramus when it comes to this stuff.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"RE: The money argument
It also goes the other way. Even in a "safe" district, if you can make it a near run thing you force the other party to spend money in that district, wasting resources they could spend elsewhere. That, by the way, is an argument for giving your vote to the Democrats and not someone like the Green Party. Even if they don't get as many votes as usual, the Republicans aren't going to panic over a "safe" district where the opposing vote was split between two parties. They will conversely, panic if the Democrats run them close, and then they'll start spending money to keep a district they would otherwise win.
This, by the way, is why I always vote, despite the fact that my home district is the safest Conservative district in Canada outside of Alberta. Possibly the safest following Alberta's shift in their last provincial election. Forcing guys the Conservatives to have to spend money on advertising in a district they honestly have no chance of losing is one of the few joys of living there.
This is what happens if Trump wins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_yKskuHVxw
. Just replace the alien and scientist with a Muslim and Latino.
The joy of watching even Republicans going after Trump for the comments on the judge
. The bit with Newt Gingrich is really special.
It's not too surprising. Most Republicans that I listen and speak to are pretty unhappy with Trump. Even the ones begging people to vote for him have stated that they are more or less only doing so very reluctantly.
Leviticus 19:34
It doesn't surprise me. It just amuses me. And on occasion, horrifies me. I don't like being on the same side of the issue as Newt Gingrich.
A Republican national security advisor explains why he'll vote for Clinton over Trump
.
I mean, I myself will support Hillary over Trump because, while I disagree with the Democrats, I'm at least willing to call them Worthy Opponents. Trump is simply not a regular politician, having no character whatsoever, and being a genuine bigot.
Leviticus 19:34@Protagonist 506: And yet, he was nominated by a majority of Republican primary voters. What does that tell you about the party itself?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Primarily, that they aren't really great at arguing with Trump. And that people who support Trump are really good at getting out to vote.

Jackson also beat his own assassin into submission. And was much more about the common man, at least insofar as the common man was the white middle class of the time. (He was the guy that invited a whole bunch of people into the White House to eat an enormous wheel of cheese, right?) Basically, as awful a person as Jackson was he was better than Trump on many levels, and could kick the guy's ass.
Also, I believe we do have an old thread specifically for discussing the merits of transhumanism. Let's not derail into that, please.
