The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] The anger of the working class during the Great Depression was a shared experience around the world; in some places, that anger was channeled enabled progressive legislation that was previously unthinkable to be enacted, in others it was seized upon by demagogues who lead the world into he most devastating war in history.

The whole world is watching this election with great interest. Concerned to see whether Trump is going to destroy our foreign policy, Sanders is going to destroy our foreign policy, or Clinton is going to be a thing.

Switzerland is not part of NATO. And I don't think most of the world cares of Sanders that much.

Also, GOP voters may be falling for Trump hook, line and sinker. They are not an irrelevant voter group.

In fairness, WWII had a lot more causes (mainly stemming from WWI and its aftermath) than just the global depression, though that was a major contributing factor.

[up]x5 — Even then, not all of them do. Some are just latching onto Trump in their "Burn it all down!" hatred of the status quo and politics as usual.

And I don't think most of the world cares of Sanders that much.

Mostly because Sanders doesn't care much for the rest of the world — and that in the rest of the world, he's barely a Socialist.

[up][up][up][up] The question is if there will be enough of them to win.

In a foreign policy speech, Hillary Clinton calls Trump "temperamentally unfit" for the presidency.

I watched the speech. It was a much more passionate one than usual.

The final battle has begun. Clinton v. Trump, winner take all.

The good news is that if the rumors about Trump's financial state are true then, in the event he loses the election, he's probably not going to be able to muster the finances to come back in four years for Election II: Trump Harder.

I always got the impression that the Scandinavian countries loved Bernie in particular, probably due to the constant praising of their countries.

Nah, honestly his brand if isolationist "give no shits about the rest of the world" brand of foreign policy is most like that of the Swiss, but most of the world doesn't know nor care who he is, he's the guy who faield to beat Clinton in the primary, that's all that matters.

Internationally it's pretty fair to say that nobody cares about Sanders, any more than they care about Cruz or Kasich.

He's had how many bankruptcies? I wouldn't wager on that. I do hope that, should he try to come back in 2020, the Republicans will spurn him.

Donald Trump wants to disqualify a judge purely because of his ethnicity I admit I do have a bit of a cringe every time I hear about Trump supporters with Mexican flags fighting with Latinos wearing Mexican flags. But Donald, you do realize the biggest threat to Latinos feeling any loyalty to the state is you, especially if you become President. For the life of me I don't know why minorities feel any loyalty to this dam country, though their is no doubt in my mind that they do. But if anything will break that loyalty it will be Trump.

[up]X6 Socalists maybe, but Democratic Soclaists, not, and most are smart enough to understand the difference.

[up]X5 He personally hasn't had any, it's always his companies that go bankrupt, not him. So the Trump campaign might go bankrupt, however right now Trump has given or loaned it 36 million, presumably he can write that of as a tax break and dodge some tax, but it's still got to be costing him something.

Assuming that he doesn't smart to steal campaign contributions. I can easily is fine him taking outside money, ensuring that he gets repaid his loans with generous interest and then declaring the campaign bankrupt.

I seriously hope that this is a minority opinion. Because that is some of the most screwed up logic I've ever seen.

And for everyone who wants DWS gone, take a good long look at the guy Sanders is backing against her.

OK, I now desperately want DWS to win her primary. Seriously, of all the candidates the Dems could find they grab a paranoid warmonger?

[up]He's one of the ones Sanders is endorsing. Don't know if he's funding him but he may be. But don't worry everyone—Sanders is a man of principle who wants peaceful international relations. Unless funding a guy like that will help him out.

Honestly, I'd have been more concerned about Sanders' weak foreign policy if there was any credible threat to the United States that could manifest itself within the next President's term(s). None that I feel would be made any better by the United States intervening in at least.*

*: Even if the US decides to pick its poison and relieve the pressure on Al-Assad instead of trying to take out both him and ISIS at the same time, you're back in the same scenario we were facing in Iraq; fighting a decades long Guerrilla war, since ISIS will undoubtedly go underground once the news breaks that the US is coming in force.

@Rational / Ambar: That position is a stinker, but even as DNC chairman, he wouldn't be able to do anything to derail it when the entire rest of the party supports it. That includes Sanders. His other positions are even further left than Sanders; he's not even a warmonger, he's just rabidly pro-Israel it seems, and there's already plenty of those people in both parties; less on the democrats, but they're still there.
