Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They're rare. The majority of people aren't like that, and are appalled that slavery or segregation existed in the first place. You're more likely to find them in the south though. I've met one in my lifetime, and she hated Jews more than black people, so that's mostly what she ranted about.

The immediate answer is that, as you mentioned in your post, they're from Dixieland.
Dixieland is the same group often referred to when we talk about "the South". The people who proudly display the Confederate flag as a symbol of that time they fought vehemently to protect their right to enslave black folks. The part of the country that all of our "Racist cop shot a black teenager" or "Protests over black kids being shot all the time" stories come from.
The people that still believe that lynching is an acceptable form of protest against the existence of non-whites. Or non-straights for that matter.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.No, they're fine with Non-Americans as long as those folks are white. Never seen an outrage over a British immigrant.
In fact, it's a popular joke among progressives that we'll pass a law removing birthright citizenship and deport all the immigrants and their kids from the country, resulting in all the white people having to leave.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I've heard a varieties of conflicting accounts about racism in different parts of the country.
I've only lived in one particular place, so I don't have much experience outside of that, but a common thing I've found is that people find racism "different" in different parts of the country. Whether you find it worse depends on your outlook and what you were already use to.
Which is why I hear "progressive" people going on about how the most racist places they've ever been is say, New York or Hawaii and people from those places may (or may not, like I said, various accounts) vehemently disagree. But you might not put much stock in that.

In case people are getting anxious about the election, don't worry - Samantha Bee has got you covered
.
Oh. Well that's at once saddening (large absolute numbers of hardcore racists) and reassuring (hardcore racists still a relative minority). I'm gonna settle for being reassured.
While we're at it, please reassure me that if Trump won and he were to invite these... militia types.. to 'supplement' the police in 'restoring order' after another black-shooting/terror attack/terror threat, the police would oppose it tooth-and-nail?

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest. — Mark TwainI actually don't think he can legally do that.
The President is the top of the chain of command for all armed forces. Commander-in-Chief, specifically. But I don't think that includes police, especially state and local cops. We have a lot of checks and balances in our system to ensure that the President can't just march into office, put his personal mob of insurgents into official positions of power, and start laying down martial law and murdering folks wherever he sees fit.
We were founded by people who were absolutely shit-your-pants terrified of our government ever having a ruler do precisely that.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I'd also point out that the main purpose of the Second Amendment is to defend against exactly such a scenario and we have tons of people chomping at the bit looking for the opportunity to fight back against an evil oppressive government, but unfortunately most of them would actually be on his side. Irony's a bitch.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The police would fight it tooth and nail, but only because it might subvert their own authority. Besides, many of the areas that support Trump are the same areas where the "Racist cop shot a black teenager" or "Protests over black kids being shot all the time" stories come from. Trump doesn't really need to supplement the police with militia-types, just find some way to make it illegal to film racist cops shooting black kids.

Wizard Needs Food Badlydropping in to comment on the Sanders Trump debate...it's a win win for the toupee.
If Sanders beats Trump, it makes Sanders look all the more "winnable" despite not being so, and may win him super delegates (or at least California, which would embarrass Clinton even if she still ends up being the nominee, which is worth it on its own for Trump) while if Trump beats Sanders, there will be those among the Sanders folks who will jump over to Trump (the figure I keep hearing is 25%...if he gets that percentage earlier rather than later, he can possibly have enough time to convert it to real support).
Sanders gets nothing from this. Just by doing it, he seems like he's sabotaging Clinton's chances out of spite, which is increasingly a path of attack against him; this would seem to be the cherry on top of such an accusation. By losing, he makes Trump seem strong (to those more populist-minded anyway). By winning, he undercuts Clinton.
Some? Try all. This election cycle pretty much confirmed what everybody already knew, but now we have direct evidence for: the vast vast vast majority of the GOP base are racist assholes. Some are just hiding it better than others.
Let's not try and downplay this fact.
New Survey coming this weekend!" I wonder if Trump's mechanisms for deflecting criticism of himself will work in the general election"
probably, Trump tactis is making himself the center of all, if someone atack him is "lololol look this retard being butthurt" if they dont do anything at all " look how coward they are" and so own, Trump is a sitcome chararter who said mean thing but run on jerkass disonance.
"I'm Australian, so US politics is not something I understand very well. "
I dont want to be mean, but the only time I face the typical "other want to kill the white men! but when we did was OK" was australian, but that maybe was just me encounter and asshole
"The people who proudly display the Confederate flag as a symbol of that time they fought vehemently to protect their right to enslave black folks. The part of the country that all of our "Racist cop shot a black teenager" or "Protests over black kids being shot all the time" stories come from. "
actually is worst, they are the guy who said the confedarate just FIGHT FOR FREEDOM AND NEVER HAVE ANY SLAVE WHATSOEVER, that they just fight for the culture THAT AGAIN, IT WASN FOR SLAVERY AT ALL, THAT IS JUST A FILTHY NOTHERM LIE, they are as pathetic as one can think.
"Largely because he's started being totally upfront about the racist part, unlike the rest of the Republicans who have been wink-wink-nudge-nudging about it for the last 50 years,"
No much, I meant is THAT close but is more "you see, SOME people are the cause of all are problem, if SOME people just live, everything will be better...*cough*mexicanarabsjews*cough* yeah, some people...."
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Racists are not the only demographic that votes Trump (and Cruz) though. Moderates (yes, really) and other components of the Sucker Demographic (the people sore about a black president are part of that) also contribute.
Also, someone talk Sanders out of this debate idea. It is a folly.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWell, im not from the US but I can see a lot of parallel between Trump and Chavez, and part of his charm is the idea of "super politic" who can do everything by himself and is not part of the establishment(yeah I know) which many see as corrupt and usless, it was only a matter of time.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
The American political system, like other presidential democracies, lacks any real mechanism to resolve political deadlocks, which means in times of high political polarization, very little gets done unless except in a de facto one party system.
The idea that the president can just snap their hands and fix the nation's problems is not helped by the fact that there were several Presidents who acquired far more power than the executive branch as intended to have due to being able to appoint an unusually large number of Supreme Court justices.
Like, borderline dictatorial power in the case of FDR, and while that didn't last beyond his death, it's questionable whether it was the system or Roosevelt's character that prevented a slide into dictatorship.
edited 26th May '16 2:53:58 PM by CaptainCapsase
If he was a dictator, FDR was more in the tradition of Fabius and Cincinnatus than the Caesars or Sulla, particularly Fabius considering the context of his term. As to why we didn't slide into proper autocracy, it simply wasn't time yet (not to mention how terrified we might well have been of such a thing happening now that we had empire). We may well get there though, might be that democracy is the glorious adolescence of every civilization's span.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."

That just stands like your standard White Genocide conspiracy theorists assholes. Not surprising, Trump has apparently riled them up.
