Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

OK; someone please talk me down from this.
If Trump is elected, I see no choice but to commit suicide. The whole world seems to be headed towards a death spiral between climate change and extremism and it offers nothing to me. Trump would be the definitive proof that the world I was promised, a world in which I just have to do my job and my life would continuously keep getting better and better is a complete lie. I do not want to become an activist, I do not want to fight, because I know if I do I will die screaming instead of merely dying. My parents would be upset but it's their problem for bringing me into this hellish world (though admittedly through no fault of their own but they are too ignorant to see how bad things are otherwise they would be begging for my forgiveness every week). I can simply enjoy myself until then but that only goes so far: I have already vowed to not have children and any relationships I have is simply someone else that drags me down and ties to to this place even further.
By now you must be feeling horribly shocked but then I ask: in that case why do you keep spouting such horrible things? Do you think that talking about them will cause them to go away? I have never in my life have heard so many people say "Everything is doomed" or similar sentiments. And yet we stigmatized those who want to run away? And all for what? So we can "cure them" by institutionalizing them and feel better about ourselves? So we can call them crazy and feel better? Or simply the biological mechanism to survive which in such dark times is more of a hindrance?
I was not put into this world by my choice so I have the right to leave. If there is a God, I will spit at His feet and call him out for creating such a hellish prison.
Again, talk me down from this.
I have some Facebook friends who are shilling for Gary Johnson. He's polling at 10 percent right now, not enough to mount any kind of electoral win but possibly enough to steal the victory from one of the major party candidates.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"An open letter to Bernie-or-Bust voters, from a former Nader supporter.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. The Bernie-or-Bust thing only makes sense if you assume that Trump (or any of the Republican nominees) would be better than Hilary. I've never really seen anyone actually explain why they feel that way.
Like, people go "She's untrustworthy" but they don't actually seem like the kind of people who trust Republicans, in general, or if they do trust them, it's to do something horrible.
It's why the whole movement has me at a loss, especially now.

Yeah, I run into a similar problem with my Republican friends who want to vote Trump. They make a few bad statements about Hillary, but never explain in which fashion Trump is better.
Leviticus 19:34Colbert had his own take on the Nader comparison.
And I also cannot possibly fathom how the people that feel that Clinton is fundamentally untrustworthy can find a Trump presidency even remotely tolerable.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe (D) under federal investigation for campaign contributions.
Worth noting:

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Hey, what are some of these corporate interests Clinton is supposedly beholden too? That's another thing people complain about a lot but are usually pretty vague about.
Also, I assume Sanders has some corporate ties? I find it hard to believe he's lasted as long as he has without playing the game at all.

Here are Open Secrets profiles on Clinton
and Sanders
Keep in mine Vermont is rural state with less than a million people in it. A guy like Sanders couldn't get elected anywhere outside of New England.
He hires the best people. The best.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company. The chart on campaign contributions sort of blows away the narrative of her being funded by big business. Which is good to know but should probably be brought up more.
Edit: Looking at it closer, it's a bit more complicated than I thought. Still, should be shown around more.

Won't happen. By the end of the Dem convention next month, there will be a single nominee, almost certainly Hillary.
So there is a time limit for either party to have a candidate before November. Thanks.
