Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The problem is that cops have never faced the overwhelming hatred people of color, gay people, and transgender people face. You can't commit a hate crime against a cop because they aren't a minority who have been oppressed. They are a group that often oppresses minorities, and this will make them invincible and stop people from defending themselves.
Also, about that employee scenario, that is the employee's mistake, not their employers', so it's not the latter's liability. Also, what Ambar is describing sounds like it would fall under "negligent entrustment", anyhow.
More generally, the Shanksville article still does not explain much of "ties". The only thing I am getting from it is that the Vermont Democrats lost a seat because of a third party challenge on his part, hence they stopped raising candidates on their own, someone called "ties" and there is no detail at all. The recent flap about Vermont's superdelegates also does not indicate that these ties, if they exist, are strong.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAlso, #BlueLivesMatter is, well, a reactionary movement to BLM populated by reactionary scum and people without sufficient attention spans or intelligence to check out the people behind the movement and their beliefs.
So, yeah, the implications are not very good. And it's an occupational hazard. You took the oath, you do your job, hopefully the worst never comes to be.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotAnd there's been even more of black children being killed over their skin color.
There are already protections in place for police officers. An assault on a officer is a far more severe crime than an assault on anyone else.
This bill is about reframing the police as victims and Black Lives Matter protesters as "troublemakers" and cop haters. That's why specified a hate crime, that's why it's called Blue Lives Matter.
This is about white supremacy, not police protection.

Oh really when? And #BlueLivesMatter was quick to label them as incidents brought on by BLM racism regardless of the facts.
Again, it's an occupational hazard. You enter that line of work, you should expect to be shot at or attacked in some manner at least once. I would expect that if I signed for the military. Or a PMC. Why would law enforcement differ?
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotOn another topic, Silicon Valley is predominantly anti-Trump.
Good for them.

There is no one currently in the race that appeals to young, white libertarian types. That being said, Trump in particular has threatened to destabilize the tech sector with his immigration policy and trade agenda, as well as siding against encryption technology when Apple tussled with law enforcement. Basically, while Silicon Valley liberals are against Trump because of the obvious reasons, Silicon Valley conservatives are against Trump because Trump in particular threatens their livelihood with his policies as many of them are immigrants themselves who rely on the global economy and know exactly how dangerous allowing a backdoor through encryption could be.
Wizard Needs Food BadlySo in regards to states passing laws like that against African-Americans and the LGBT community, in which states are they?
For example, the religious freedom laws that just discriminate against the LGBT community. I know they include Indiana, North Carolina, and Mississippi, but where else? How could they get repealed?
Really, I've noticed that in politics, terms like "religious freedom" and "Blue Lives Matter" is just code for discrimination.

The "Young White Libertarian" vote seems to be getting caught up in the Gary Johnson hype, according to my Facebook friends at least.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"They're reversals. Saying "They're discriminating against us for discriminating against them!"
Not that the concepts are bad on their own. People should be able to practice religion how they wish and cops shouldn't be killed just for being cops.
But you shouldn't strengthen the police when they already have authority above you.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stay![]()

Leviticus 19:34

Hate crimes are reserved for crimes motivated by bigotry against minorities of all kinds. That and it's called the Blue Lives Matter bill. Read between the lines and do some math.
Police don't need extra protections, there are already very severe charges for anyone who attacks them above and beyond the usual assault and battery ones.
This bill isn't about protections, it's about sending a message. A disgusting one at that.
Oh really when?
