The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Not a cent? How exactly does he justify that last point?

The Mexicans will pay for it, of course.

I still can't believe there are people who actually think Mexico will literally pay for a wall to keep themselves out of the US.

Like...what?

Well, people also think that the government's investing in mind control satellites (I remember a poster here saying a Senate candidate in... California, IIRC, saying she'd oppose such measures a while back).

They honestly think America is being bullied and disrespected by other nations? It's the opposite way around. America bullies and disrespects other nations.

The idea that America is being bullied doesn't shock me. It's similar to the belief that white people are discriminated against or that there's a war on Christmas. White people in the US don't understand the difference between being bullied and not receiving special treatment.

Reminds me of a tongue-in-cheek line from King Of The Hill on sexism, something like "It's worse when we get our privileges taken away because we're used to them!" in reference, I think, to how treating boys and girls sports equally is more to the detriment of the boys than for the benefit of the girls, or something along those lines.

That sentiment is probably applicable in a lot of scenarios.

As far as how Trump's supporters expect him to get Mexico to pay for the wall, there's an unwritten expectation that it involves coercion. Because nothing helps intetnational relations like bullying a neighboring country into a blatantly unequal treaty over a pointless border wall.

Trump said he'll stop all money transfers out of the country from people of Mexican descent until the Mexican government pays for the wall.

Well that's how he says it, but I can't help but wonder if his plan is more "threaten Mexico with 'regime change' if they don't cough up."

Given that's blatantly discriminatory I don't think he'd be able to get very far with that idea. Even if he managed to implement such a thing there'd be tons of people subsequently attempting to sue the government. (And I'm not sure he can stop a private business like Western Union from transferring money anyway???)

If he does managed to do that I'm not sure how that would encourage Mexico to pay us to build a wall, though. It's like Step one: Stop money transfers, Step two: ?????, Step three: PROFIT!!!!!

Trump can. He can nationalise Western Union, and order them to stop any transfers to/from Mexico.

Somehow I doubt he'd do that, what with the "EEEVIILLLLLLS" of socialism and the fact that many people would protest that he nationalized a business (and I think in America doing such a thing would require a pretty extreme situation because otherwise why would the president bother?) and then apparently did so just to stop money transfers.

Well, the government could theoretically make it illegal for U.S. citizens or corporations to travel to, send or receive packages from, or in any way do business with Mexico. It's what they did with Cuba.

If memory serves Trump has a white paper about how to implement his immigration policy (the only thing coming close to a concrete program, the SCOTUS appointments aside, that Trump has in his policy "agenda"), maybe it does go into detail.

I doubt Trump would be hesitate to institute socialist policies in the US if they benefited him, to be honest. Having said that, his popularity would certainly plummet if he really tried to make Mexico a pariah on the level of Cuba. And really, it'd be a lot harder to stop all trade between the US and Mexico, since our current immigration situation proves how easy it is to smuggle things (and people) across the border.

Unless Trump builds a wall to keep the US out of Mexico.

Come to think of it, if I were Mexican, I actually might be tempted to pay for a wall between my country and a Trump-governed America. Maybe that's Trump's strategy — to make the US to be so utterly obnoxious that Mexico will eventually consider it a good investment to prevent American citizens from crossing the border.

Trump attempting to cut off trade with Canada would have weird effects in New England, since the power grid crisscrosses into Canada and the two really big power plants near Niagara Falls are pretty interconnected. There's also a town, Stanstead, on the border between Quebec and Vermont that literally sits right on the border. The town library is in both Canada and the US. I wonder how it would go there.
