The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A hundred years ago they would (which, incidentally, was when the Census Divisions were drawn up).

[up][up][up][up][up][up] Like I said, I messed up on the wording of the first part of that statement. I deeply agree with what you're saying here. Essentially as I see it, geography defines culture. If a culture happens within a particular region, then it is part of that region's culture, not the other way around.

Also, I feel that people only reference a state's Southerness when something bad happens.

[up][up][up]Oh, don't do that.

[up][up]People don't often think of Maryland as being Southern, but this does not make them right.

[up]It does if they mean culturally. Culture is fluid, you can't keep it entirely within tightly confined borders.

[up][up]True, but things change.

Oh, I wasn't disagreeing with you - I'm just saying the Census Bureau hasn't changed the divisions for continuity purposes.

[up][up]Southern culture is the culture of the South. If a culture is in the South, then it is Southern culture. A different Southern culture, but a Southern culture nonetheless. I live in North Carolina. Twice a year, I travel to and back from NY State to visit relatives. I do not feel like I have passed into a truly different region until I reach Pennsylvania. Maryland just has more in common with Virginia than PA.

How close are you to Baltimore when you drive through? I think that'll make a difference in one's impression of what state goes where - if you're dodging the Beltway by using I-81 I'd imagine the Southern impression would persist into even Pennsylvania.

[up]I've been to Baltimore a few times. It's its own phenomenon, different from much of the South and Maryland, but that does not make it Northern.

[up]It's a similar situation to Baltimore. We don't really have another city quite like DC (Although Harrisburg is sort of a miniature Northern version), but, like Maryland, it is not part of the North in geography, it is not enough like the North to be considered Northern, and it is not unique enough to be considered its own region. So yes, I would call it Southern.

Also, we should probably try to wind this tangent down.

I haven't got an article yet but I just got a notification from my phone's Reuters app that the White House is on lockdown following shots being fired nearby.

EDIT: Got one

It's the looming election. After the president's been in office a few months, everything should go back to being just mildly frightening.

Can Hawaii be considered a US Territory in Oceania? Because while it is a state in Oceania, it is disconnected from the mainland US and not connected to any Oceanian country, so the US isn't transcontinental with Oceania.

[up]No, it's certainly a state, not a territory. By definition, a territory is not a state. It used to be a territory, though.

Looks like the White House thing was your typical nut with a gun thing. Guy approached a security gate with a gun. Security told him to drop the weapon. He refused, they shot him. Stories I've found have said he's alive but in critical condition at the hospital.

The saddest part is that I can't even bring myself to consider it much more than business as usual.

"As Hillary Clinton becomes increasingly frustrated with Bernie Sanders’ dogged campaign against the party establishment..."

What an opener.

It's not like the Republican side where they were all openly bashing each other. The Clinton campaign seems to want Sanders to just give in and team up, which, at least, sounds more noble.

I mean, I'd still want her way more than Trump. She may have changed her stance on a lot of things just for popularity's sake, but it's not a crime to change your mind on things.

Does anyone have any reason for me to even consider Trump?

I can't think of a reason anyone would prefer Trump over either Democrat. Other than bigotry, GOP party line toeing or delusion.

I'd have to play Devil's Advocate (perhaps literally), and know your views. But I could probably try? If you really hate the current establishment, you might argue that Trump at least isn't a politician.
