The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] All morality is subjective, but irrationality and subjectivity are not the same thing; the underlying objective being pursued cannot be called rational or irrational, but certain prescriptions of a particular moral code can indeed be deemed irrational on the basis of not being demonstrably conducive to the underlying goal being pursued.

In the case of abortion, under pretty much any materialistic moral code, an early fetus, lacking a nervous system, is no more important than any other similarly sized clump of human cells; it lacks the capacity to experience pain, and does not qualify for personhood.

I was all set to type out a reply, but then I thought I should ask first . . . are we allowed to discuss abortion here? I seem to remember mods giving "cut this out" warnings in the past when the discussion drifted that way.

[up]Not really. I myself kind of stated my views on the issue-I figured that was ok since people here have stated their own views.

Breathe. Suppose a Clinton presidency doesn't make things better. Can you not take comfort in the fact that they aren't getting worse? Focus on what you can do—voting in a way that helps deny Trump the White House.

In my experience, this thread usually tries to stay away from Abortion, because it always leads to people talking about morality which goes nowhere.

Plus its an issue that people feel very passionate about, so flame wars tend to ensue.

Former Pennsylvania Governor and prominent Clinton supporter Ed Rendell says he’s sorry for saying that Hillary Clinton would be president because she carries the “ugly women” vote.

I don't know if this is relevant to this thread, but apparently there was some controversy that arose recently when a political cartoonist made some drawing comparing Michelle Obama to Donald Trump's current wife (whose name I have forgotten) by featuring Michelle as looking like a man in drag (complete with over-exaggerated muscles a noticeable crotch bulge) and Trump's wife as being all make up, smiles, and waving an American flag.

Eh, I think given the history and context it's a fairly plausible hypothesis. But this is Trump after all.

Also, I must say, the Democratic party response to the Nevada dust-up seems to be fairly apologetic...

Hillary's poll numbers might have something to do with that.

Also the fact that, according to Snopes, no images or videos document anyone's throwing chairs at the Nevada convention. [1] So the whole "violence at the convention" talking point might be overstated.

A chaplain attempted to block Syed Shahid Ali, a Muslim Republican, from becoming the precinct chairman for the Harris County Republican Party.

[up][up]I love the part where the chaplain calls Ali out for not even faking participating in prayer....Because integrity is apparently secondary to fitting in...

[up] Personally, I'm still chuckling about the guy who wants proof that Islam is a religion. It almost sounds like a parody.

I think that's a fairly common position among Islamaphobes. The whole "It's not really a religion it's a cult!" stupid argument.

My reaction to that is "Isn't that what the Romans said about Jesus and his pals?"

[up] Yes, but that was when it was just Jesus and 12 guys. so the Romans had actual justification to call it a cult. Islam today is nearly 1/4 of the world's population. Only Christianity today has more adherents.

[up] And Catholicism is different from Protestantism. It isn't like these officials calling Islam a cult are making a distinction between different sects of Islam.

The problem is that it gets distilled into the most radical denominator in the public eye so often.

Scuttlebutt is that all these bathroom bills are an attempt to distract attention away from something bigger or otherwise more controversial.
