The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He wasn't exactly Lincoln or Washington, but I'd take a clone of W over Trump, Hillary, or Sanders any day. Though, really that's mostly because he's not a socialist, pro-life, and not a racist. These are usually minimal standards for me.

Cutting child aid and education. So he doesn't exactly think of the children.

And lol @ Katrina's response compared to Hurricane Charley and Frances' responses in Florida. So there's racism.

Well, Protagonist is IIRC extremely pro-life (like, more extremely pro-life than the Cruzes of the world). So...

[up]That would probably be accurate (I'd have to read Cruz's proposition. Rubio's position would probably be more extreme than mine). I admit I'm a being a Single-Issue Wonk on the issue, but I'm fine with something like the Oklahoma proposition (I'm not sure if it's realistic, but I don't think it's unethical). Personally, I'd include easier access to contraceptives and sex education so that unwanted pregnancies happen less, along with legislation that restricts it.

Bush wasn't a racist. He is after all, the guy who coined the term "Religion of Peace".

Just because he's not Islamophobic (debatable) doesn't mean that he didn't see Frances and Charley as more pressing matters than Katrina.

[up][up]There's probably other explanations for that, but regardless he's not a bigot in the sense that Trump is, and therefore much better than that particular candidate.

Again, I think Hillary is the best choice of the three candidates right now, though only by pretty low standards. I disagree with her quite strongly on gun control and abortion, and I'm not sure about her economics, but I can respect her in ways that I wouldn't for Trump.

I'm worried about that, too. I'm MORE worried that people will take the Bernie or Bust thing too seriously.

On the plus side, perhaps next election we'll get someone with his progressive ideals that actually knows what they're talking about.

Iran Parliament Passes Bill To Seek Compensation From US

Obama was right.

But obviously what Americans can do to Saudi Arabia, the Iranians can do to America.

Then again, it seems fair. lol

Nah. You just can't win when 70% of women and 80% of hispanics loathe you. Trump's supporters are largely a Vocal Minority even within the Republican party, aside from misguided people who think he's less evil than Hillary.

I give Hillary her congratulations in advance.

[up][up][up]My definition of "better" is "Right of Obama". So I'm pretty optimistic here.

[up]Well, I disagree with Obama's stances on more than just those issues (I'm not a huge fan of his economic policies, for example. I'm also somewhat cynical of his foreign policy), but less fervently so. If he was anti-abortion, I would probably like outright like him.

I just have a hard time being anti-abortion because I know people who wouldn't be alive and children who never would have been born if abortion were illegal. There are a lot of medical complications that come with pregnancy even in this day and age.

[up] Moreover, there is no rational reason to oppose early to mid term abortion. I am not counting religious beliefs here, as they are, by their very nature, irrational insofar as faith is by definition a belief which is held despite a lack of empirical evidence supporting it.

Well, all morality is irrational, so that seems like a meaningless distinction.
