Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Both Lincoln and FDR had extraneous circumstances, with the former having to only deal with controlling half a nation... The other half was under the presidential control of Jefferson Davis as the Confederacy. FDR was able to pack the Supreme Court because he ignored Washington's unofficial precedent of two terms as president, which is why the 22nd Amendment exists. As for precedent in terms of members of the Supreme Court... the actual historical precedent is to have as many judges as there are circuit courts... which would mean we should have eleven Supreme Court Justices.
Crossposting from the racism thread:
Breitbart: Now engaging in overt anti-Semitism
.
How long until they actually use "Hitler did nothing wrong" as a headline, I have no clue.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotSeriously, as in believing them, or seriously, as in understanding the enormous damage they can do with their stupidity?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So, in other "this fucking election" news (that isn't new at all, but I only recently found a news article from a reputable source on the topic), Clinton's campaign is engaging in some online astroturfing via the "Breaking Barriers" arm of her Correct the Record Super PAC
, paying people to say nice things about her and criticize her opponents online.
Especially damning from that article is mention that the guy in charge of it, David Brock, used similar tactics to smear Bill and Hillary while Bill was President, and the fact that they're engaging in some Loophole Abuse by coordinating with the Super PAC... but it's legal because it's online-exclusive coordination. How the fuck that particular loophole got snuck into the Citizens United ruling is beyond me.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Holy hell, does that guy in the article look plastic. Seriously, that is some Uncanny Valley right there, but with an actual person.
In some slightly funny news, Mike Webb, Republican candidate for Virginia's 8th congressional district, forgot to close out his porn search tabs when taking a screenshot to be shared with his followers on Facebook.

You forgot the best part - that post came (no pun intended) when he was posting about how savvy he is when it comes to being online.
But the part that always rankles me in cases like this is the blatant hypocrisy on display when it gets caught out. Rather than simply own up to it and say "Yeah, I watch porn. So?", public figures instead go with the "I'll pray for guidance!" or "This is the corruption of the world at work!", or some other infuriating thing.
This all makes me think of that one episode of Mission Hill, namely the speech at 17:49. Seriously, this should almost be required watching for people in this situation... and those that make fun of them for doing it (rather than making fun of their hypocrisy).
- Andy: People, you mock this boy, but it's your fault he's here today. Your hypocrisy has made this boy a prisoner, terrified of his own sexuality. So much so that he'd rather send two relatively-innocent men to prison than admit he looks at pornography! He thinks his natural urges are filthy and perverted, and why? Because of your conspiracy of silence! Nobody dares admit the truth - that you're all just like him!
It passed unanimously.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.

Continuing from previous post: Oh God, it's a worse blunder than I thought.
At some point, it is not clear when, after being informed by CIA general counsel Caroline Krass that the Justice Department wanted all copies of the document preserved, officials in the inspector general’s office undertook a search to find its copy of the report. They discovered, “S***, we don’t have one,” said one of the sources briefed on Sharpley’s account.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
