Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It'd be like walking up to a Christian and literally taking a shit on a picture of Jesus.
What about when saying "fuck you" to someone else's religion is part of your religion? I mean, the Church of Satan chose most of its iconography specifically to spit in the face of Christianity.
It's also laughably right wing in a lot of its particulars, depending on which group you're talking about.
In any case, I'm pretty sure you'd get arrested for publicly taking a shit on anything, so maybe that's not the best metaphor, and anyway it seems like we're veering off topic. (Also, does anyone really burn bibles anymore? I think people got bored with that.)
A quick search reveals Miley Cyrus burned one last year at one of her concerts as part publicity stunt, part political statement. (Complete with declaring support for Hillary, just so this can remain somewhat on-topic.)
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)
Gay rights are too mainstream nowadays to do that and still be taken seriously. It's the GOP's neverending struggle to remain relevant, yet bigoted in a changing world.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Seems like they are moving on to a better front line, to me. Although the "homosexuality is a choice" thing is still wrong.
Also, a few pages back: I stand by that comment on Debbie Wassermann Schultz. The way she's supporting the loan industry is just too off-party for my liking.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanYes the consent was specifically a dick thing but it's possibly to draw Muhammad without being a dick. Nobody cared when South Park first did it in July of 2001, because unlike the later depiction attempt they didn't make a thing out of him appearing and a storyline about people wanting to shut it down. He was simply a character alongside a half dozen other religious figures.
Generally depictions of Muhammad are done so as to insult Islam and piss people off, those are dick moves, but one can do it with no such intent, the same way one can eat meat without doing it deliberatly to anger vegetarians.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranPfizer blocks its drugs from use in lethal injections
"We are enforcing a distribution restriction for specific products that have been part of, or considered by some states for, their lethal injection protocols," the New York-based drugmaker said on its website. "Pfizer strongly objects to the use of its products as lethal injections for capital punishment."
The move shuts off the last remaining open market source of drugs used in executions, following similar actions by more than 20 U.S. and European drugmakers, according to a report in the New York Times on Friday.
Interestingly, previous actions have led to several States using Black Market Drugs for Executions.
Pfizer said it offers the products because they save or improve lives, and markets them solely for use as indicated in the product labeling.
Incidentally, The Far Side once had Mohammed in a strip, where a mountain was ringing his doorbell while his wife was outcontext . No idea whether there was any public outcry or controversy over that depiction.
Another thing to keep in mind, however, is that there's been some major disagreements in the past over the Catholic Church using stained glass and other artwork to depict various Saints, and whether that would constitute "worshipping false idols".
I thought so too (namely, related to the Catholic/Eastern Orthodox split), but couldn't find any supporting evidence for it. Hopefully the current series on Extra History will cover it soon.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Cross Posting with LGBT Rights and America:
Congressman Mocks The GOP’s ‘Great American Bathroom Controversy’
-
“The party of small government wants a government small enough to fit underneath the toilet seat,” said Democrat Alan Grayson.
He also apparently flat out asked "my God what is wrong with you people?"
They also courted Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to run for president in a third-party bid.
This is getting kinda pathetic.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.

"They have the right to practice their religion, free from discrimination and prejudice. When there's a public "draw Mohammed" contest, it is trampling on their right to practice their religion free from prejudice and hatred."
They don't actually have the right to practice religion free from either of those. The only guarantee is a freedom from suppression. If we're allowed to burn Bibles, we should be allowed to draw Mohammed. I wouldn't ever do so, because a.) a particularly insane Muslim will fucking murder me; and b.) it's pointless and petty. The Constitution isn't a moralistic document, and it's not there to provide refuge for hurt feelings. Part of living in a civilized society is knowing when to Turn the Other Cheek.
