The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, the complaints are rare and loud enough that those who are complaining should be looked at closely.

The fight over the Food and Drug Administration's new e-cigarette regulation has begun.

At issue is the FDA's decision, announced May 5, requiring the agency to approve e-cigarettes that have gone on the market since 2007 — essentially all of them. Complying with the rules would cost e-cigarette makers $1 million per product SKU, according to Ray Story, the head of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, a trade group. He describes it as a "de facto ban" that will cause users to smoke more regular cigarettes.

E-cig users seem deeply concerned about this.

The Clinton Foundation is denying a Wall Street Journal report that alleged the organization steered money to a for-profit company partly owned by Clinton friends and Democratic donors.

I'm still pissed that a "draw Muhammed" contest was even held. Like, that's impossible to interpret as anything but an insult to muslims.

I guess one could use it to prove a point, the speech equivalent of a freedom of navigation op. Next time one of these dam "blasphemy attacks happens I'm going to draw some crude stick figure, call him Mohamed and post him on my Facebook. I am not kidding.

Mind you the people behind this contest had far less noble motives, as I recall they were some sort of far right group.

As someone who works there, I actually asked about that kind of thing. (Not the event specifically, mind you.) Apparently there's legal issues barring the building from showing bias about who rents the space out, so even if the guys in charge didn't want that particular event they kind of had tied hands. And there was a whole issue with how renting it out makes it count as "private property" at a later event held by Muslims (Some kind of conference about Islam and the guest speaker had some sort of alleged crime in his past).

Which means we had to deal with right wing protesters showing up in the early hours of the morning who wanted to set up, buy parking, and being very confused when my supervisor asked if they were against physical fitness. He thought that was hilarious. (There was a fitness event that I worked parking for, we weren't sticking around for the later event.) It wasn't fun leaving that place, as I stupidly ended up going straight through the crowd because I couldn't figure out where the street went the other way.

I have to side with the right of people to draw - and yes, parody and mock - Mohammed. The right of a parodist or satirist to freedom of speech trumps the right of religious individuals to not have their faith mocked or criticized. Those who want to stop that through violence should be dealt with.

While in this case the contest was simply someone being a dick, being a dick is, in fact, not a crime.

Its more than just being a dick though. Depicting Mohammed through imagery is a horrible thing, and in every single case, just comes from a place of "fuck muslims and their right to practice their religion".

It'd be like walking up to a Christian and literally taking a shit on a picture of Jesus.

How's it "horrible". Like, what's the harm? And how does it trample on Muslim's right to practice their religion? Practicing your religion doesn't involve telling others how they should regard your religion or others having to adhere to your religions neurotic rituals and rules.

They have the right to practice their religion, free from discrimination and prejudice. When there's a public "draw Mohammed" contest, it is trampling on their right to practice their religion free from prejudice and hatred.

I do think that "you can't depict this person visually" is a bit of a questionable rule to impose on others but I wouldn't intentionally try to cause muslim people offense.

It's not the same as eating pork. Its more like forcing a Jewish person to eat pork.

No its not. Forcing a Muslim to draw Mohammed would be like forcing a Jewish person to eat pork.

Someone doesn't eat pork in order to insult Jewish people.

If someone draws Mohammed, it is 100% because they want to treat Muslims like shit.

What if I eat pork just to insult Jews?

I've seen people eat meat specifically to piss off vegetarians, for example. That doesn't make eating meat horrible. It just makes those people horrible.

Calling for people to be beheaded, stoned to death, or burned at the stake for such an insult is way over-the-top. In a civilized society, people don't murder each other over stuff like that. Instead, we sue each other.

[up]I'd argue that you probably shouldn't sue, either.

As for drawing Mohamed: You have a right to do it, thanks to the 1st amendment. I also have a right to point out that it's a relatively good indicator of d-baggery.

IIRC, though, the trick to drawing Islam's prophet is simply to throw a veil over his face.
