The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Governors? Well, Republicans do have the majority of governor posts...

Senators? Only 3 out of the 10 most popular ones are Republicans. And only 4 among the 10 least popular are Democrats.

Democrats think he's a war-monger.

Tea Party repubs think he's a RINO

Everyone thinks he's a flip-flopper who will do anything to stay elected.

I like the guy personally, but he has no shortage of flaws.

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) endorsed Donald Trump for president after meeting with the presumptive GOP nominee and other Senate leaders.

I thought Mcain would have been pretty nice as a president. His Vice President...not so much.

@I Love Dogs: My home state of Maine is no surprise. Politically, we have usually been a three way split between both parties and a huge number of independents. And by today's Tea Party Standards, Susan Collins is a RINO, while Olympia Snowe would be an independent Centrist.

Yeah, Mccain wouldn't have been awful but risking President Palin (the stress of the job could have killed him) is a total no-no.

To be fair I honestly think the Mc Cain campaign didn't know how nuts Palin was when they nominated her to be veep. Believe it or not she was well known for fighting corrupt oil companies when she was in charge of Alaska. According to an Alaska couple my Grandparents went on a cruise with Palin just seemed to morph into a different person when they nominated her to be Vice President, I guess fame will do that to you.

Apparently Trump is in favour of a "deportation force" dedicated to rounding up and "getting rid of" the Illegal Immigrants.

The "getting rid of" part makes me rather nervous.

If memory serves, even Cruz wanted to round up illegal immigrants. Which was incidentally part of the reasons why I prefer Trump over Cruz.

Trump took the idea from Cruz actually.

And yes, they wanna make their own Gestapo to go door to door and hunt for minorities to deport.

Oh really when?

No, because Cruz is a true believer right wing fanatic with no redeeming qualities. A Christian Taliban by the book.

Trump does sometimes say and do nice things, c.f his defense of "New York values" when Cruz first brought it up and the flip-flopping on the transgender bathroom controversy (rather than Cruz who fully embraced the bigots there). Occasionally. And as this rounding up episode shows, many of his most horrible stances are shared by Cruz.

Cruz is basically a man with an iron heart. Nobody can stand him because he is just All Cruelty All The Time.

My estimation of him is that he is a maggot. He eats decay and derives nourishment from the suffering of others.

Some people who've worked with him, from staffers to John Boehner, have said very telling things. One staffer outright said Cruz took a sadistic joy in human suffering when "they deserved it for offending god". As in, by these accounts, he liked it when Transgender people got killed just for being themselves.

In comparison to him, Trump seems downright charming. There are at least people Trump genuinely likes and will defend. See "New York Values" and a recent interview between him and O'Reilly (where somehow Trump ended up the less racist one).

Cruz on the other hand - the more we learn about him, the less there is human in there.

On the other hand, Trump is totally willing to back the same principles as Cruz for the sake of power. The fact that he doesn't believe in any of that stuff and still goes along with it anyway to amass influence arguably makes him more despicable, not less.

Yeah, the thing with Trump is that he's kind of what I picture Big Brother from 1984 as being like (if we assume he actually exists). To him, the object of power is power, and truth doesn't exist.

[up][up] The difference between Trump and Cruz is the difference in motive. Cruz is a Knight Templar in motive. Trump is a Glory Hound in motive. Quite frankly, the big issue in focusing protests on Donald Trump is that it ignores that the entire Republican Party for the most part supports the more heinous policies that Trump expounds publicly.

Donald Trump: Muslim ban 'just a suggestion'.

The first Paragraph really says it all:

Donald Trump, who issued a December press release "calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States," said Wednesday such a ban "hasn't been called for yet" and it was "only a suggestion."

When he said "Wall" he actually mean 'dainty, picket fence'.

An Illinois judge ruled that the lawsuit against Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) alleging workplace retaliation will tentatively go to trial in the months before her November election.
