Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Let's flip that around, though: a white guy walking down an alley notices a black guy following him, and sees the black guy has a gun tucked into his coat; the white guy assumes the black guy is planning to kill him, so he beats the black guy up. Would your sympathies really be in the same place?

X3 Yep, assuming that the black guy had been clearly following him (as it was in this case) and hadn't simply turned down the same ally.
You stalk someone with a gun and the fear that you're about to kill them is legitimate.

As long as carrying a gun is legal, treating the presence of a gun on someone's person as an indication they plan to commit violence (thus justifying a pre-emptive attack) is a very bad idea. That would mean any person carrying a gun who seems in any way suspicious is open game for assault.

It's possible to run a way from a knife wielding guy (provided he isn't a ninja), it's harder to outspeed a bullet.
Non Indicative UsernameOnce you get south of Orlando the culture becomes decidedly different that that of the rest of The South, particularly in the Keys and the Miami metro area (I'm not as sure about the Tampa Bay area). Mind you, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of racism to be found, it just might be of a somewhat different flavor then that of the rest of the South.
Yeah, south Florida has more in common, culturally speaking, with New England than with the South. Northern Florida, around the panhandle, is very much part of the South. Central Florida is a mix of the two, depending largely on the urban/rural divide — if you're in Orlando or Tampa, it's not very Southern. If you're in the boonies of Polk County, it's more Southern than not. Sanford — where Treyvon Martin was killed — is part of the Orlando metro area, for the record.

Probably. There is no reason why the Obama admin. won't appeal this decision.
Here's the poll. [1]
On the other side of the coin, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker (R) is the most popular. Wouldn't be suprised if he tries to run for president in 2020/2024.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Looks like most governors are good approval ratings. Sorta surprising given the presidential primary; wonder if it means anything for the general election.
On place two of that "unpopular governor" list is Rick Snyder, no wonder.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanKeep in mind that most people hate all the politicians except the ones they can vote for. For example, while people hate Congress as a whole, people are happy with their two Senators and one Representative that represents them. I assume this goes for people like Governors as well.

As goes Maine, so goes Vermont: They really seem to like their Senators.

Under Stand your Ground I belive that Martin was under no obligation to withdraw himself when an armed stranger came after him.
Threatening behaviour is I belive a crime or at least a recognised act, following a kid down a back ally while armed sure sounds like that to me.
