The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]That article is idiotic. I might mock Bernie's supporters all the time, but even I know enough of them are genuine Democrats, who will support the nominee, whoever it is.

The methodology is mentioned in the comments, and biggest takeaway I found was that the polls were conducted via surverymonkey, and "spammed across twitter, facebook, and some email." At best, it only clarifies the preference of the audience in that medium.

I talked to a Dem political operative, not a footsoldier or a major player, and she figures about a quarter of Bernie's support will not support Hil in the general. So not a majority, but not insignificant either.

Not supporting Hillary is not the same as supporting Trump.

I do not know how many of them would go to Trump. But it isn't none or insignificant.

A Logger cuts the wood that makes the paper for the books that a library loans out which is where a Librarian works at.

So here's something both funny and depressing that we need to be reminded of: Nixon nixed a full-scale universal basic income scheme and started the "undeserving poor" narrative because one of his advisors used an incredibly dodgy royal commission report from over a century earlier in the UK on a similar scheme to convince him that it was a terrible idea.

Yes, Nixon was going to introduce a universal basic income scheme. NIXON.

The US and the entire western world could've have one of the best ways to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality decades ago, had it not been for a dodgy royal commission over a century earlier and an Ayn Rand fan. Well, now I know what else we can blame Ayn Rand for.

The truly idiotic thing about that article was it seemed to be supportive of voting Trump over Clinton, as if a vote for Trump would solve any of the problems the Sanders supporters are on about.

I suspect that it's written by one of the #Burn It All Down (sorry I mean #Bernie Or Bust) lot. The group it polled explains it all, if you assess Sanders supporters based just on what idiots claiming to be supports say on social media that's probably the right result, but Sanders is more then a socal media fad and his support base is much larger then a few idiots on Twitter or Reddit.

Yep. Nixon's plan was virtually identical to Obamacare, (even had the same architect of the plan advising Obama) and was the conservative response to a liberal Congress led by Ted Kennedy that was pushing hard for single payer.

There are certain elements of Bernie's fanbase that suffers from Black-and-White Insanity re: Hillary vs. Trump, or prefer a disastrous Trump presidency in order to radicalize the opposition and bring about "the revolution." It's exactly as idiotic as it sounds.

I still find it so crazy that even with large supermajorities, we couldn't get a decent healthcare reform until 2010.

This recent article convincingly argues very much the opposite point, that the vast majority of Sanders' voters will never vote for Trump. Simply put, despite some superficial similarities, there's far too much of an ideological gap between the two. Trump will not be able to properly court Sanders' voters without alienating the voter base that made him the GOP nominee in the first place — and you'll notice that Trump has already shedded some of his more leftist views in favour of party orthodoxy (like immediately backtracking on his recent statement about wanting higher taxes on the wealthy).

[up]X3 I don't know what stopped Clinton but I know that early attempts were stopped because any national healthcare plan would require desegregation hospitals, which wasn't going to happen.

(Vox) Hillary Clinton wants Medicare Buy-In

(Richard Mayhew) Medicare Buy-In Thoughts

Note, this is a hold-over policy idea the Clintons were chasing over in the 90s. The basic concept is people on the cusp of retirement and not 65 yet can buy into Medicare so they don't have a blank period between Work was covering them and getting Medicare to cover them.

By definition, people who are anti-politics don't vote. When push comes to shove, the polls will reflect this.
