Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Clinton's campaign, which had previously ceased its ad buys in the remaining primary states to focus on the general, is apparently rethinking that strategy lest Sanders win enough of the remaining delegates to force a contested convention. -_-
As for what's wrong with Sanders, it's not just his inability to back up his economic ideas with concrete plans. It's not just his protectionist trade agenda, which is populist catnip. It's not just his dogged insistence on breaking up big banks or reinstating Glass-Steagal, which are nice sound bites but wouldn't fix any of our current problems. It's not just that he's making spurious claims of illegitimacy against Clinton, or tacitly abetting his more virulent supporters in their aping of Republican mudslinging. It's not just that he's settled on a kind of victimization complex towards the primary, where he's only losing because the Democratic Party is against him.
It's all of those things together. I can't match the reputation as a man of intellectual integrity with the actions of the candidate.

It's about humiliation and punishment, to make the criminals suffer.

Well, frankly you guys weren't balls of sunshine either. But I'm getting too aggressive so I'll stop
Meanwhile, in local news...
The two main streets in town (North/South and East/West) are being torn up and milled down, in preparation for re-paving, whether they really needed it or not. (Hint: they didn't.) Why, you ask? Because it's an election year, said streets are also numbered State Routes, and our State Representative doesn't want us to forget about him and all the good work he's doing. So he reminds us by making our daily commuting as inconvenient as possible... for about a month (so far.)

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Even if the "SJ Ws" (and I hate that term because it's deliberately derogatory and thrown at anyone who shows hints of giving a fuck and is used mainly by folks on the right such as anti-feminists to protest that they can't have anything fun anymore) are on the rise, the frat boy is still a thing that exists. Hell, Seth Rogan is releasing a sequel to his movie about frat boys, and he's using the frat boy to battle sorority girls.
(Sidebar, I'd say it's not the media on the right so much as the media in general that's blowing it up, and even then not very much because a few articles and getting on the news once or twice doesn't seem like a situation "blowing up" to me. They were reporting on recent events that seemed notable and while it came off as obnoxious it didn't seem like most of the articles I read were negative.)
I don't know about social justice warriors being rare, I encounter them a lot on the internet, or those espousing some of their views. Then again I hang around on Tumblr and TV tropes so maybe the sample is a bit biased.
Also I'm surprised PC isn't more of a thing in Europe, you guys are more into restricting speech than us, not that that''s a problem. Also you guys are kind of leftwing heaven, so I assumed you were not only in to PC, but that you were the ones who invented it and spread it over to our side of the pond.
Much of Europe took a big rightward lurch recently. Keep in mind, the US is really right wing plus whatever the hell the Tea Party is, since they certainly aren't conservative. For example, Canadian politics are pretty centrist by most standards, and in many ways, the entire mainstream American political establishment is to the right of the entire Canadian political establishment.
Yeah, and the SJW thing really isn't a major movement. Unless you expand it to cover anti-racism movements, anti-sexism movements and so on, which are kind of important to have.

wasn't West Virginia the one where he literally said "don't vote, I've already won"?
