The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He knows his base will fall for it. I have had conversations on Twitter (I know, I know, stupid of me) where, upon being asked to provide evidence that he's racist, I shared the CNN video of him being asked to disavow the KKK and refusing to do so three times. I was then asked why I believe whatever the media tells me.

Not to mention that 9/11-7/11 debacle, which would have just been written off as a simple verbal slipup and gone away, if his supporters hadn't insisted he meant some 711 fire hall address or the number of a battalion. There is no objectivity with some of them. Everything Trump says is gold and everything that seems to be evidence that he's not a genius is written off as the media being unfair to him. They've heard him say these narcissistic things about himself and how "poorly" he's being treated, and they jump to defend him like a battered spouse.

Assuming Big Brother is an actual human being (which in my headcanon he is not), he's probably a lot like Donald Trump.

Donald Trump isn't a real human being, either. He's about as fake and phony as you can get without being a 'toon. (Which, I suddenly realize, is a gross insult to 'toons everywhere, for which I sincerely apologize. But it was the only metaphor I could think of offhand.)

Technically, Trump is a human being. Unless he's a fictional candidate being played by an actor.

However, he probably suffers from at least one personality disorder. It also wouldn't surprise me at all if hew as a pathological liar.

My vote is on narcissism. Look at how every time he beats anyone in the polls, his victory speech isn't about his policies or about how the American people are being treated, but about how badly he beat his loser opponents and about how unfairly he's being treated.

Yep, definitely a Narcissistic Personality Disorder at work there.

If you listen carefully to one of Trump's speeches (any one, doesn't matter), note how many times he says "I" or "me" or "my" or "mine" when he might have spoken differently so as not to directly insert himself into the topic.

I'd do so myself, but I'm not a masochist.

The sheer contempt in that article towards Bernie made me quit reading after only a few paragraphs. The margin between Bernie and Hillary is ridiculously close, and it's quite likely that he would be in the lead if not for DNC stuff.note

If Hillary wins, and picked Sanders as VP, then at best he'd be 76 if she only did one term and let him go next. That is pushing it.

Marco Rubio makes a statement. [1]

While Republican voters have chosen Donald Trump as the presumptive GOP nominee, my previously stated reservations about his campaign and concerns with many of his policies remain unchanged. He will be best served by a running mate and by surrogates who fully embrace his campaign. As such, I have never sought, will not seek and do not want to be considered for Vice President. Instead, I will focus my attention on representing the people of Florida, retaining a conservative majority in the Senate and electing principled conservatives across the country.

Damn, that sounds pretty final.

I wonder who Trump will end up picking.

There are now 3 factions in the party: the Trumpists, the anti-Trumpists, and the rest who just want the other two to get along so they can win. Everyone else has already jumped ship or will have done so by November.

Fighteer: Wait, what? The other day, Trump was saying he wanted to bargain with the U.S.' creditors for cut-rate repayment. Which is it, bonehead?

Amusingly enough, his response about his tax plan and minimum wage reversals could also be used as a response to this.

""On my plan they're [tax rates for the wealthy] going down. But by the time it's negotiated, they'll go up," Trump said. "Look, when I'm negotiating with the Democrats, I'm putting in a plan. I'm putting in my optimum plan. It's going to be negotiated, George. It's not going to stay there. They're not going to say, 'There's your plan, let's approve it.' They're going to say, 'Let's see what we can do.'"

Sure, it's a change. I'm allowed to change. You need flexibility, George, whether it's a tax plan, where you're going — where you know you're going to negotiate.

Former Facebook employees say they actively suppressed conservative news.

Facebook issued a statement later denying any sort of political bias in its trending topics.

I think there's a difference between conservative bias, and conservative stories. Slightly.

Conservative stories appeal to conservative readers. Conservative bias is doing or reading things in a conservative tone. So pushing conservative stories may indicate a conservative bias, but conservative stories on their own are just stories.

What kinds of things are conservatives interested in? Illegal immigration, taxes on the rich, cases of censorship...things they believe applies to their side. What kinds of things are liberals interested in? Things like racism, raising the minimum wage, gay rights...

This is all broad strokes, but some people just have different values of what they see as important.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stay

Well, if I were the FB staff, I wouldn't promote any story that's openly bigoted or anything that's an overt conspiracy theory, so that eliminates a chunk of right-wing stories right there.

So I guess this is probably the best place to ask: What's the difference between neoconservatism and neoliberalism?
