Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

One example:
MSNBC Did a story on the Tea Party. One had an AR-15 slung over his back in protest of gun control laws. MSNBC took close-ups of this guy and claimed that the Tea-Party was racist, and that only white people attended their rallies.
They used manipulative editing to hide the fact that the guy with the AR-15 was black and wasn't doing anything particularly illegal.

Leviticus 19:34Old-ish, but very insightful: Think Trump’s wrong? Fact checkers can tell you how often. (Hint: A lot.)
Also, apparently Sanders is slightly more dishonest than Hillary but Trump and in lesser measure Cruz are far ahead of them.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman
Plot Twist: Trump doesn't actually exist, and his entire campaign was all an elaborate prank.
Mistyped.
I've seen theories about that. I believed this Cracked article about his campaign manager until about halfway through.
And then there's this Late Show interview with a "slightly less cartoonish version" of Donald Trump. ;p

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayThere are people who claim that Trump is a Democratic plant, hence that brouhaha earlier in this thread about Bill Clinton supposedly having a phone conversation with Trump. See also
.
I've joked about that a few times. It...wouldn't entirely surprise me, to be honest. He acts like a liberal's parody of a Republican more than an actual Republican.

Leviticus 19:34Considering that he's never been a part of either party until this election he's never been told that he needs to act with any sort of class by either party.
I believe I've said before that he's not really a Republican because this is literally the first time he's run for office, doesn't particularly care about either party platform, and ran as a Republican because that's the field that gave him the in to actually succeed. He wouldn't have had a chance on the Democratic side; it was a much tighter race with a much different group of dedicated voters who wouldn't have voted for him.
"N. Carolina sues DOJ over transgender 'bathroom law'" - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0Y00CB
Credit where it's due, this is some impressive doubling down given the NC governor admitted on Fox News Sunday that there had been zero instances of transgender crime in public bathrooms.
As an aside not mentioned in the article (and exemplified by the article) apparently pundits and journalists are shitting themselves over this, elsewhere, as Trump is basically smashing one of the key pillars for "Cult of Centrist Bargaining". As well as many Journalists are now young and inexperienced and have no idea what any of this means.
Wait, what? The other day, Trump was saying he wanted to bargain with the U.S.' creditors for cut-rate repayment. Which is it, bonehead?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Near as can be told, he's basically going "We're default on our debt to fuck those creditors up, even though we don't have to, to show them who's really in charge."
He's basically arguing for pro-Debtor debt relief and stabbing creditors in the eye with his thumb.
The point is, Trump is arguing for bizarrely accurate if catastrophic policy, but he is right.
The U.S. never needs to worry about its own debt, and that's making a lot of Centrist Neo Liberals and Technocratic Wonks EXTREMELY mad because they've made Paul Ryan a Very Serious Person with a sage beard (that he since shaved), that we need to take our debt seriously.
This is doubly infuriating as they base a lot of policies like "We need to raise Social Security eligibility and cut Medicare and Social Security" on "THERE IS GOING TO BE A DEBT CRISIS, and only by cutting entitlements can we stop it!!!"

"Republican Rubio distances himself from Trump VP talk" - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0Y02GS
Trump's bullshit, but he's essentiallly arguing for a Nationalist Socialist policy basis that kicks sand in the eyes of Pundits, Centrist Politicians, most of the Main Stream Media AND Wall Street.
He is literally grabbing the Political Econ Football, and running to the left of Hillary. And every time he keeps saying Econ things in the last few days, he's technically right. Mind you it's in a screwball way, but he is.

Trump is absolutely wrong that we could successfully negotiate cut-rate repayment on the debt. He is absolutely correct that we cannot ever go bankrupt. The man is essentially Twitter on loudspeaker.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I am no longer convinced that Trump has a consistent position on anything. He just says things. Any thing at all without regard to whether that thing is true or false or realistic or not. He will say blatantly contradictory things from one day to the next, see what sticks to the wall and plays well to his audience and then double down on it. If you point out that he was contradicting himself, he will scream and shout that he is not and that you're misrepresenting him until you go away just to get away from his screaming. He is the very personification of bullshitting.

Depends what you mean, MSNBC is taken a lot less Seriosuly and has a lot less reach then Fox, it's certainly at times tried to be as factually inaccurate, but that's not what we need.
