The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If you're voting for the lessor of two evils, you're still voting for evil. Vote for the person you think would actually make a good president, not for a substandard candidate you think has a better chance of winning or is at least "better than the other guy". Perhaps fate or providence will smile on you for having voted your conscience instead of trying to game the system.

Clinton isn't even the lesser of two evils though. She's not some scary monster who wants to scam you out of your money or job or anything.

@Fighteer - Thats my point actually. Policy matters little to the perception people get, and thats how Sanders has managed to coast and why Hil has struggled and why Trump polarizes.

@Bense - Go third party then?

I don't think she'll make a great president. I think she'll be a solid dependable choice that gets the job done. Not great, but competent. That's not the lesser of two evils. That's, we don't have anyone perfect, but we have someone who is at least good. So let's go with good.

Yeah, in my case it will be either a third-party or a write-in.

Seems like Kasich might be dropping out now, according to some reports.

About "lesser of two evil is still evil" thing.

If I have to choose between living with a thief versus living with a mass murderer, I'll choose the thief.

I would choose neither, and endure whichever I must actually live with with the knowledge that at least I didn't help either in their crimes.

So you'd go with meaningless symbolism over trying to ensure as little damage as possible was done?

Damn, I was sure we was gonna last until the West Virginia primary.

And now there is 1 I suppose. Who would have thought that 1 would have been Trump.

[up]X 4 If you still have to live with one regardless, then there isn't really that much of a distinction between choosing one and choosing neither. In they instance it seems it'd be better to pick the one you think you could live with and hope for the best.

I am not going to refuse to choose. I am going to vote. Just not for either the Democrat or the Republican candidates for President this year.

While you are not necessarily wrong, you simply do not have that luxury. First Past The Post voting ensures that there can only be two candidates at all times. This video (that you quite possibly have seen before as it's quite commonly linked during these discussions) explains it quite well. TLDW: voting third party only ensures that the candidate you like least takes the win.

Then you're voting for Trump.

Any vote that isn't a vote for a Democrat says you tolerate Trump and at least passively support him.

Oh really when?

Conversey, isn't any vote that's not for Trump implicitly tolerating Clinton or passively supporting her? :I
