The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Kasich will almost certainly follow Cruz out.

I wonder if Kasich will drop out.

CNN is reporting that Ted Cruz will drop out of the Presidential race following his shattering loss in Indiana.

And then there were 2.

Well, damn. Well, I guess we can now say that the Republican party has more or less become a complete parody of itself. Let's hope that doesn't spread to the United States, shall we?

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

[up][up], [up]

I'm not so certain - I could easily see Kasich sticking it out long enough to try siphoning votes off Trump and force a Contested Convention.

At this point, he could do that and it'd still not be enough to slow down Trump. The man has proven himself to be a phenomenon. What arguably started out as a joke ended up with him representing the second most powerful political party in the world.

I must say, I'm starting to feel uncertain about his so-called lack of chances in November. Pray for your soul, everyone.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

(Buisness Insider) Ted Cruz Drops Out.

It looks like he's officially suspended his campaign. Now it's going to be Trump vs Clinton for sure.

Well, barring Primary shenanigans.

Quick, someone invent a time machine so I can go back to mid-2015 and ask people if they think the final two Republican candidates will be Trump and Kasich.

It would appear that the Zodiac Killer (Ted Cruz tongue) has finally seen the writing on the wall and given up.

I'd just like to take the opportunity to say that if there's anyone from AH.com reading this, tell the Cruz fanboys over there "I told you so". winktongue

I just thought of something. I get why so many pundits have been shocked by Trump's rise. They keep saying stuff like 'why? His favorability ratings are so low!'

Just because people may not like someone doesn't mean they don't think they are the best person for the job. They might view trump as a raging asshole but as long as he gets stuff done they'll put up with it.

...

Wham Episode doesn't even begin to describe this. Grab your helmets and kevlar vests, everyone, because Cruz dropping out is gonna make this uglier.

Will this possibly affect things with Clinton v Sanders?

I will lose most of my respect for my family if they take Cruz dropping out as "Well, guess we're voting for Trump!"

@120858: I've done so.

Well, fuck. Cruz was my last hope against Trump.

It means Trump has the nomination clinched — unless they go for a brokered convention to shut him out. Dunno who they'd nominate in place of him, though.

There's still a mathematical possibility of Trump not winning on the first ballot. And if he doesn't win on the first ballot, then it's a brokered convention and they can call Cruz back.

...yeah, at this point Trump has it bagged and tagged.

I'll vote for Kasich in the primary. A Trump-Hillary run is rapidly inducing apathy in me. Trump's an asshole and a bigot, but the whole democratic party won't stop hitting me in the admittingly Single-Issue Wonk areas. I can't in good conscience vote for either.

I've already pretty much reached a Despair Event Horizon. If Hillary gets in over Sanders, it'll be the final nail in the coffin for the US.

Aaaaaaagh.

No. It. Isn't. Hillary. Is. Not. The. Antichrist. She. Will. Not. Run. The. Country. Into. The. Ground.

She is precisely as conservative as Barbara Boxer. She's not going to turn the country into some evil dystopia like everyone thought Romney would. She's going to be fine. If Trump wins, WE ALL DIE.

Trump and Hillary isn't even a contest. Anyone who honestly thinks the country would ruined under Hillary is delusional. At worst it would just be more of the same.
