The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

But the solar panels will get rid of the sun!

...I'm still in shock that some people actually believe that.

Not too long ago some people were freaking out about how solar panels would suck up the sun and kill us all.

They'd also poison the air with electromagnetic radiation.

"Her evidence is dead plants located around solar panels"

Plants growing in the shadow of giant structures wither and die because they don't get enough sun. Truly this is a marvelous observation.

For construction, DOT stuff, and utility work here they don't hire locals though, they contract out to private companies that employ cheaper foreign laborers that are classified as "contractors" so they can't be counted as normal employees and given benefits.

Well, it would not be terrifyingly difficult, if you're going to pass a massive infrastructure spending bill, to require the hiring of U.S. labor for it, but even if you don't, it would be far more work than could be done by those foreign "contractors". And by the way, I assume you are referring to undocumented immigrants?

Actually, rereading the original article again (not just the IFLS one), it seems the townpeople were more worried about the solar panels lowering their property values. The relatively minor complaint about reduced solar radiation killing shit is about vegetation around the panels getting less sun due to shade....

Why do solar panels decrease property values?

[up]It seems the woman's house was literally right next to the solar farms.

[down]I mean I can totally understand that. If you live in an area where the major attraction was having great views and easy access of green grass and wilderness, then having a bunch of metal slabs everywhere would probably lower the home value.

The same applies to windmills.

Solar panels I can see (black metal slabs against green grass). Windmills I find pretty, even hypnotizing.

Gosh, do I love windmills.

The trick with this kind of thing is the same as was done with the railways, back in the day; make the local populace shareholders in the new infrastructure. People complain less about trains being bulky and noisy when those trains are making them money. Likewise, people will be less whiny about windmills if they visualize cents coming into their pockets with every turn of the wheel!

it would be incredibly efficient to hire all these people to fix up their own roads, bridges, pipes, etc.

@Fighteer, can't say for sure, the ones I've met have all been legal laborers with work visas. Around here most of the undocumented migrants are snapped up by smaller shady construction companies or farms note since there's a bit more oversight when it comes to large state contracts. For long term projects the laborers will try to pool their resources and rent trailers where maybe 15-20 people are crammed into each. Pay is the legal minimum wage, which for here is well below even a survival wage in a lot of cases. Until the economic downturn similar construction jobs landed an experienced local at least twice that.

So, we document all the workers and increase the minimum wage so they are forced to compete on a level playing field with out-of-work coal miners.

Clearly, we need to arm and train our toddlers to fight off the terrorists.

Maddowblog:Trump's most impressive boast is a brazen lie.

Specifically, Trump likes to make a big deal about how he opposed the Iraq war in 2003, contrasting himself with Clinton in that regard. Trouble is, there's no record of him ever doing so until well after it became unpopular with the general public.

Do we got a better source than the Daily Heil? Not that I doubt that Trump said something like that but I find it's best not to trust them on principle.

Oh really when?
