Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, if someone is using present tense (ie "The United States is the only Superpower") then they are only making a statement about the current status of the world. What went on in the past is a point aside.
As for the future, anything can happen in the long enough term. I think the most likely scenario under which the USA loses it's superpower status will be the result of other nations becoming stronger faster than us over the course of several decades rather then any specific catastrophic event.

It was also in part the even omit damage done by the world wars, both the UK and France were pretty wrecked. Plus Russia managed to drop from a superpower to being a global power and the territory it lost wasn't that key.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyranand there is always the chance the US sometime in the future could lose it's status
If the term hyperpower was ever accurate, it definitely isn't today. The US is still a superpower but it is no longer the only relevant power, as shown by Russia and China defying the international order with impunity.

I just went on a trip to New York City, and one of the places I visited was the Museum of Natural History. It was full of Theodore Roosevelt quotes and, holy crap, the Republican party clearly bears no resemblance to the party when he was around.
Also, everyone was making fun of Trump. I saw someone egging Trump Tower as well.

In fairness, Roosevelt was something of a misfit in his party even back then. They effectively tried to Kick him Upstairs by naming him Vice-President to get him and his trouble making self of the way, despite a prophetic warning that they might regret that.

What did he say?
In regards to the US's power status, I say we were a hyper power from the collapse of the Soviet Union and it's empire until the 2008 economic crisis. Oh and I know you guys won't want to hear this, one of the reasons Britain stopped being a great power was it's decision to build a gigantic welfare state around the same time as they were berried up to their eyeballs in debt from both world wars, and of course the country was bombed to bits. I must say it is impressive just how much shit had to be piled on the Brits to reduce them to a mid level power globally. Just one of these challenges would probably see the US sent back to isolationism.

Non Indicative UsernameBeing a superpower is your ability to assert yourself outside your territory. In my calculation, Spain stopped being one after its defeat in the 30 Years War, which stopped their ambitions and began the long decline, even though they basically still ruled two continents at the time, their ability to threaten beyond their territory had become diminished.

On Sanders distancing himself from him
And Larry Wilmore's last line.
