The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

One wonders why the hell non-Democrats should be allowed to vote in the Democratic primary. If you're not even a member of the party, then why should the party give you a say in nominating their candidate?

In the case of the US I think non-party members should be allowed to vote in either the republican or democrat primary (only one of those) because the way your electoral system is set up, as far as I can understand it, basically forces people to chose between those two options or nonenote . For that reason, I believe people should be allowed to choose amongst the primary candidates which one they feel represents their views the most instead of "do I want the kick in the stomach or the punch to the head?".

Here's a counterpoint to that closed primary thing: if you wanted to vote in the Democratic primary, you had months of time to check the rules in your state and correct your registration, if necessary. I did. So what's the excuse of people who didn't?
That most people start paying attention within the month, if not the week, of the election, so voting registration should at least be close enough to voting day to allow those people to know who the candidates are, and choose if they want to vote for any of them.

@Fighteer: Certainly, but I'm not going to denounce a good idea just because Republicans did it. If I did that, I would be acting just like them which is more unacceptable than giving credit where credit may be due.

So the majority of Californians should have to suffer if a tiny group make a stupid decision?

That makes no sense.

As a Californian, I'd rather my state become its own country:

Funnily enough I do identify myself more as a Californian than an American.

[up] Which state though?

California doesn't have enough military power to secede. Traveling and trading would be much more difficult.

But we're like better than like the rest of the US. I can only dream about what it'd be like if the rest of the US stopped dragging us down.sad

My dad was sent a video about how Hillary Clinton is a corporate shill, and it really upset him; not because he think it's full of shit, but because he plans to vote Democrat and is upset that he has to choose between, well, Trump, and a shill who may not be as bad, but is still in the pockets of big business.

He hopes Bernie Sanders, even after losing the nomination, remains a thorn in the Democrats' side, and pushes their policies to the left and forces them to at least make some kind of effort to actually do what the voters want.

Assuming it makes it through Congress. This is one thing you can thank Republican obstructionists for - as Paul Ryan has said, he's pretty sure the votes aren't there for the whole thing.

Yep. Many GOP congressmen/senators hate TPP because it doesn't give big pharma and big tobacco what they want, and the Democrats hate it in general, and it's one of the few issues most of the Democrats will refuse to compromise over. TPP pleases no-one, and trying to get it through congress would be a herculean task.
